The university is currently seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Custodian to join its facilities team. This position involves performing a full range of custodial duties to maintain cleanliness, order, and the aesthetic appeal of the University's buildings. The role is essential to upholding the institution’s high standards of environment quality and ensuring the comfort and safety of all campus users. Responsibilities include extensive cleaning of floors, furnishings, bathroom sanitation, waste disposal, and the operation of specialized cleaning equipment. Additionally, the Custodian will be tasked with setting up spaces for special events, requiring both physical dexterity and the ability to follow diagrams and written instructions accurately.

This role requires a hands-on individual who is capable of working efficiently both independently and collaboratively under general supervision. The ideal candidate will possess experience in using floor machines and cleaning chemicals safely and effectively, exhibit strong attention to detail, and be able to adapt to various physical demands such as lifting, bending, and prolonged walking over uneven surfaces. Given the environment, the Custodian must also be prepared to work in conditions exposed to dust, chemicals, and outdoor elements.

This is a full-time position with an hourly wage range from $17.99 to $21.59, reflecting factors such as experience, internal equity, and alignment with the university's budget. Job Requirements

  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • must complete employment eligibility verification by first day of employment
  • able to lift and carry moderately heavy items (20-30 pounds) and occasionally very heavy items (35 pounds or over)
  • able to perform physical tasks including walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces
  • capable of operating powered machinery requiring manipulation of controls and fine adjustments
  • comfortable working in environments with exposure to dust, chemicals, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations, or dampness
  • able to work under general supervision
  • willing to undergo pre-employment background check

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • vocational or specialized training preferred
  • one year of relevant work experience preferred
  • experience using floor machines for shampoo, extracting, stripping and refinishing highly desirable
  • ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations
  • ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • ability to do special event setup using diagrams and sketches
  • ability to operate assigned tools and housekeeping equipment or willingness to learn
  • ability to work with chemicals and cleaning solutions
  • ability to lift and transport supplies
  • ability to work effectively under general supervision

Job Duties

  • Cleans assigned areas by washing furnishings, walls, windows, tile, fixtures, equipment and floors
  • vacuums, dusts and polishes specified areas and/or furnishings
  • sanitizes and disinfects bathroom areas and replenishes paper and soap supplies
  • responsible for cleaning all types of flooring surfaces, including stairs
  • operates floor buffing and waxing machines and other standard cleaning equipment
  • vacuums and shampoos carpeting
  • collects and removes trash and recyclables
  • picks up, distributes and monitors supplies and equipment and locks them up at the end of each shift
  • sweeps or shovels snow from buildings, entrances and steps
  • cleans and dusts bulletin cases, pictures, trophy cases, fixtures, door frames, and related furnishings
  • reports malfunctions, unsafe conditions, repairs and damages of equipment, fixtures and buildings to supervisor
  • performs setup for special and athletic events
  • performs all cleaning tasks in a timely and complete manner
  • works with other employees in a dependable, collaborative, and effective manner
  • maintains open and responsive relationships with the college community, including guests, students and other employees
  • performs other related duties as assigned
