Job Description
The Environmental Management Services Division of the VA Medical Center located at the Chalmers P. Wylie Ambulatory Care Center in Columbus, Ohio, invites applications for the position of Housekeeping Aid (HKA) - Environmental Services (EVS) Technician. This medical center is part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, a federal agency committed to providing exceptional healthcare to American veterans. The VA Medical Center in Columbus serves veterans across Ohio and nearby regions as part of a network of healthcare services dedicated to honoring veterans through quality patient care and comprehensive health programs.
The Environmental Services Division at this VA facility plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment crucial for the health and recovery of veterans and their families. As a Housekeeping Aid - EVS Technician, you will contribute directly to patient care by ensuring that various areas within the facility, including wards, patient rooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, and other spaces remain impeccably clean and hygienic. This role requires performing both janitorial and custodial services including light and heavy cleaning, routine housekeeping functions, and maintaining the overall appearance and cleanliness of the VA Medical facility.
This is a permanent, part-time position (20 hours per week) with a competitive pay scale ranging from $18.59 to $21.68 per hour, classified under the WG 2 pay grade. The selected candidate will work primarily during weekend shifts, specifically Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This schedule offers the opportunity for those seeking part-time government employment while gaining experience in a respected federal healthcare setting.
The Housekeeping Aid - EVS Technician position operates under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or their designee. The technician performs a full range of cleaning duties that significantly impact the patient care experience. The responsibilities include managing spills promptly, discarding trash efficiently, replacing light bulbs in hallways and rooms, vacuuming and polishing floors, and cleaning various facility areas to ensure a safe environment for veterans and staff alike.
The work environment mostly consists of indoor areas with adequate heat, light, and ventilation, though some duties may require exposure to outdoor conditions and potential contact with infectious materials, blood, or bodily fluids. The role demands physical stamina and dexterity, including continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Candidates should be prepared to use powered cleaning equipment that may weigh over 50 pounds and perform tasks that require close visual acuity to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.
This job is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the United States and includes provisions for priority eligibility for federal employees affected by job or agency elimination under CTAP, ICTAP, and RPL programs. Additionally, this position is filled under Direct-Hire Authority, reflecting the agency’s need for efficient recruitment to support its vital mission.
In joining the VA’s Environmental Services team, you will be part of a workforce that includes many veterans, fostering a community grounded in shared values of service and respect. This position offers the opportunity to work within a Whole Health System of care, focusing on personalized health plans and healing environments for veterans, aligning with the VA’s mission to honor America’s veterans through exceptional healthcare.
