Job Description

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a nationally prominent research university and Oregon's only public academic health center. Recognized as the No.1 hospital in Oregon by U.S. News and World Report, OHSU leads in educating health professionals and scientists while providing advanced patient care, community service, and cutting-edge biomedical research. As Portland's largest employer, OHSU offers a career that is not just a job but a calling, fostering a diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist multicultural environment where individuals of all backgrounds are welcome.

The Environmental Services Technician role at OHSU focuses on reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections by maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of clinical environments. This position is vital for protecting the health and safety of patients, especially those in vulnerable conditions, within hospital and clinic settings operated by OHSU. The role involves general cleaning duties in both patient care and non-patient care areas, including patient rooms, intensive care units, operating rooms, office spaces, and restrooms. Technicians are responsible for cleaning and sanitizing surfaces, floors, and medical equipment such as beds, stretchers, and bassinets using appropriate chemical cleaners and disinfectants.

Environmental Services Technicians at OHSU play a critical role in infection control by adhering to the highest hygiene standards to prevent the spread of infections within the healthcare environment. Duties also include waste removal, operating waste sterilization equipment, and maintaining equipped spaces by restocking supplies, such as soap, paper towels, hand sanitizers, and disposable seat covers. The role requires effective teamwork, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service both in person and over the phone, ensuring positive patient experience. These technicians operate specialized cleaning equipment and may need to handle physical tasks involving bending, lifting up to 35 pounds, and working at a rapid pace throughout their shifts.

This position offers day shifts with schedules determined during the interview process. It is part of the AFSCME union representation. OHSU values stable work history, the ability to communicate in English, regular attendance, and demonstrates continuous application of core competencies related to environmental cleaning and patient safety. Preferred qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, six months of custodial or healthcare environmental services experience, and CHEST certification (Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technician). OHSU supports its employees with a comprehensive benefits package, including two annual raises, extensive healthcare coverage, pension plans, generous vacation and sick leave policies, paid holidays, transit discounts, and additional programs like tuition reimbursement and employee assistance programs.

Joining OHSU means becoming part of a renowned institution committed to groundbreaking research and superior patient care, with career advancement opportunities across multiple hospitals and clinics throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Through their dedication, Environmental Services Technicians at OHSU contribute significantly to the well-being of patients and the broader community, upholding the university's legacy of excellence and compassionate service.
