The role of an Environmental Service Worker at Jersey City Medical Center is a full-time, evening shift position offering an hourly wage of $19.79. The ideal candidate will work under the supervision of the Environmental Services Department and be responsible for cleaning and supplying patient rooms, nursing stations, ancillary areas, and other assigned locations in accordance with the department's standard procedures aligned with the Medical Center's objectives. This role is pivotal to ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment conducive to patient recovery and staff efficiency.
Environmental Service Workers are tasked with a variety of cleaning and maintenance duties including managing emergency spills, maintaining housekeeping closets, collecting and transporting waste in strict compliance with policies, and performing detailed cleaning functions following established schedules. The position requires the use of approved equipment to perform tasks such as damp buffing, shampooing carpets, mopping floors, dust mopping corridors, and emptying waste receptacles.
Beyond cleaning duties, this role includes arranging furniture for meetings and community events, monitoring and reporting maintenance needs for equipment, furniture, buildings, and fixtures, and ensuring supplies such as paper towels and soaps are replenished regularly. This position also requires the ability to adhere to a 9-step patient discharge cleaning process to maintain hospital hygiene standards.
Working full-time, Environmental Service Workers are expected to cover a 40-hour workweek on the evening shift from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM and must be available to work every other weekend and holidays in accordance with departmental needs. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Successful completion of general and department-specific orientation required
- Ability to work evening shift between 3:00 PM and 11:00 PM
- Availability for full-time 40 hours per week
- Willingness to work every other weekend and holidays as needed
- Physical ability to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks
- Adherence to hospital safety and infection control protocols
Job Qualifications
- Successful completion of general and department-specific orientation
- GED or high school diploma preferred
- Hospital housekeeping experience preferred
Job Duties
- Arrange furniture for meetings, workshops and community affairs
- Assists in cleaning of emergency spills observed or upon request
- Cleans housekeeping closet and maintains par levels
- Collects and transports all waste, including RMW, according to policy
- Compacts trash or places in containers
- Damp buffs and shampoo carpets with approved equipment
- Dry and wet mop floors of rooms and offices
- Dust mops and wet mops, corridors, stairwells and other common areas
- Empties waste receptacles and removes trash
- Maintains assigned equipment for cleanliness and has repairs made when needed
- Observes and reports the need to repair equipment, furniture, buildings and fixtures
- Performs cleaning functions in assigned areas following established schedules and using prescribed methods
- Performs patient discharge cleaning using a 9-step cleaning procedure
- Refills paper towels, toilet paper, soap and toilet seat dispensers
- Returns promptly from errands, breaks, meals
- Scrubs and burnishes floors with approved equipment
- Transport bulk trash from designated collection points to the compactor area
- Uses and prepares solutions according to procedure
- Vacuum carpets
