The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager role at Johnson Controls is a critical position situated within the San Antonio, Texas plant operations. This onsite role is designed for a safety leader who will spearhead various initiatives and projects aimed at advancing the plant's environmental, health, and safety objectives. The person in this role will ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations as well as Johnson Controls' corporate safety systems, driving the company’s vision of achieving Zero Harm. The EHS Manager will engage the entire workforce, both salary and hourly employees, to foster a culture of safety and environmental responsibility. The role includes managing hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs, preparing and submitting necessary environmental reports, supporting ISO14001 and ISO45001 management systems, and coordinating audits and inspections to mitigate hazards and maintain compliance.

This role requires a strategic thinker who blends technical expertise with strong communication and leadership skills. Responsibilities include reviewing changes to manufacturing processes, collaborating with Facilities to ensure property risk compliance, presenting customized safety and environmental training programs, and leading safety improvement projects using advanced technology and industry best practices. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of OSHA standards and proven success in implementing safety culture improvement plans focusing on injury prevention and behavior-based safety. The position offers a competitive salary range between $89,000 and $134,000, depending on experience and skills, with a bonus plan tied to individual, group, and corporate performance. Job Requirements

  • University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5-7 plus years minimum experience within a manufacturing environment
  • experience with high hazard controls in a manufacturing environment
  • proven experience developing and driving safety culture improvement plans
  • experience implementing injury prevention and behavior-based safety initiatives
  • skills to be considered a safety subject matter expert in cranes and rigging, electrical/Arc Flash, fall protection or welding
  • strong background in OSHA standards and compliance reporting
  • proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • effective professional communication and organizational skills
  • strong customer service orientation

Job Qualifications

  • University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5-7 plus years experience in manufacturing environment
  • experience with high hazard controls in manufacturing
  • proven success in safety culture improvement and compliance management
  • expertise in one or more safety areas such as cranes and rigging, electrical/Arc Flash, fall protection, welding
  • strong knowledge of OSHA standards and regulatory compliance
  • proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • excellent communication and organizational skills
  • customer service orientation
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or related EHS certifications preferred
  • experience with ISO management systems preferred
  • knowledge of behavior-based safety programs preferred
  • skills in Lean Manufacturing and Safety Kaizens preferred

Job Duties

  • Engages the workforce to drive cultural change and achieve environmental, health and safety objectives
  • ensures compliance with federal, state, local regulatory requirements and corporate safety systems
  • reviews and approves changes in manufacturing and engineering related to plant layout, machinery, equipment, and safety designs
  • supports property risk compliance with FM Global assessments and facility inspections
  • maintains and improves the corporate environmental management system by collecting and analyzing environmental data
  • prepares and submits timely environmental reports such as Tier II, TRI Form R, and wastewater monitoring
  • participates in the administration and compliance of ISO14001 and ISO45001 management systems
  • manages hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs ensuring proper handling and disposal
  • coordinates air emission, wastewater, storm water, and waste audits and tests
  • develops and delivers safety and environmental training programs
  • applies health and safety engineering practices to identify and mitigate risks
  • conducts research to implement best industrial safety practices
  • identifies unsafe practices and implements corrective measures
  • leads safety improvement projects using technology and innovative methods
  • audits EHS hazard control programs such as lock-out tag-out, JHA/JSA, and permit programs
  • collaborates with Safety committee and union leadership to resolve safety concerns and share best practices
