Job Description
Strategies to Empower People is a 100 percent employee-owned company that has been serving adults with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) since 1994, operating in the greater Sacramento area including Napa, Solano, and Sonoma counties. As the largest provider of its kind in the region, the organization is deeply committed to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in a way that promotes their independence, dignity, and full community participation. With a strong emphasis on personalized care, Strategies to Empower People provides tailored support that reflects each client’s unique needs and aspirations. The company fosters a culture of empathy, respect, and innovation, empowering both its clients and employees to thrive in fulfilling roles.
The role of Direct Support Professional (DSP) at Strategies to Empower People is an entry-level position designed for individuals who are passionate about making a meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of adults with developmental disabilities. The DSPs provide direct, in-home and community-based support, assisting clients with daily activities such as eating, bathing, cleaning, and toileting, encouraging active participation from the individuals themselves rather than offering mere assistance. This approach promotes not only care but empowerment, encouraging clients to engage fully in their personal lives and communities.
These positions are available on a full-time and part-time basis, and the company offers set schedules, making it easier for employees to plan their lives outside of work. Working as a DSP involves supporting clients in their own homes and taking an active role in the community, which often involves accompanying clients on errands, exercise, or recreational activities such as visiting local farmers' markets or exploring parks in Napa County. Compensation varies depending on the shift, with awake hours paid at $20.25 per hour and asleep nocturnal hours at $16.90 per hour. Additionally, for certain roles involving In-Home Support Services (IHSS), pay rates comply with county standards, such as $20.90 per hour for Napa County. These details will be clarified during the interview process.
The role requires compassion, patience, creativity, and adaptability since no two clients' needs are alike. Strategies to Empower People provides comprehensive training for all new hires, making it an excellent entry point for those new to caregiving or direct support roles. While prior experience is appreciated, it is not mandatory. Depending on the placement, some positions may require a valid California driver's license, reliable insured vehicle, and a clean driving record to assist with client transportation.
As a company fully owned by its employees, Strategies to Empower People offers various benefits to support its staff, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, paid time off, sick leave accrual, and a 401(k) retirement savings plan with a company match. Mileage reimbursement and an employee assistance program are also provided to ensure that team members feel supported in their personal and professional lives. The company truly values its employees and nurtures a supportive and rewarding work environment. If you are looking for a career that goes beyond traditional entry-level jobs and want to contribute to building a more inclusive community, the Direct Support Professional role at Strategies to Empower People offers a wonderful opportunity to grow and make a significant difference.
