Job Description
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the leading global cloud platform, offering comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud computing services. As an integral part of Amazon, AWS has pioneered cloud technology and continues to innovate, empowering businesses of all sizes — from startups to Fortune 500 companies — with scalable, reliable, and cost-effective IT infrastructure and services. AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS's worldwide infrastructure, including all data centers that host their extensive cloud computing portfolio. These facilities are at the core of enabling seamless digital experiences for customers globally, ensuring high availability and robust performance.
The role of Data Center Engineering Technician at AWS is crucial in maintaining the mission-critical infrastructure that supports AWS's services worldwide. This position involves hands-on troubleshooting, maintaining, and operating mechanical and electrical equipment within data centers—such as three-phase electrical systems, standby diesel generators, cooling systems, battery backups, power distribution units, and fire and life safety equipment. The technician plays a fundamental role in achieving an extraordinary 99.999% uptime, keeping the data centers running efficiently to support AWS's commitment to reliability and excellence.
In this role, the technician will supervise contractors, perform preventive maintenance tasks including diesel generator servicing and battery system upkeep, conduct root cause analyses for operational issues, and ensure strict adherence to safety protocols. Responsibilities also include maintaining critical infrastructure equipment, managing contractor work in accordance with established procedures and local laws, and participating in an on-call rotation schedule where shifts may extend up to 12 hours. This dynamic role requires physical endurance to perform tasks like lifting, climbing, and working in various environments to maintain uninterrupted services.
Candidates joining the AWS Infrastructure Services team will collaborate with a diverse and inclusive group of engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers focused on delivering innovative solutions while maintaining the highest standards for safety, security, and cost efficiency. Amazon prioritizes an inclusive work culture that welcomes bold ideas and personal ownership towards achieving excellence in cloud infrastructure operations. AWS encourages candidates from various backgrounds and experiences to apply, emphasizing ongoing career development and mentorship within the team.
The position is based in Santa Clara, California, offering an hourly wage range of 43 to 75 USD, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, 401(k) matching, paid time off, parental leave, and more. As part of Amazon's commitment to diversity and compliance with employment laws, accommodations are provided for those with disabilities throughout the hiring process, and candidates with relevant experience, even if unconventional, are encouraged to apply.
In summary, the Data Center Engineering Technician role at AWS offers an opportunity to be at the forefront of the cloud revolution by ensuring the reliable operation of a vast global infrastructure. This role demands technical expertise, physical capability, and a commitment to safety and quality, providing a rewarding career path for those passionate about enabling world-class digital experiences.
