Job Requirements

  • Possession of valid California Class C License
  • Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) certificate
  • CPR certification
  • Instructor license in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required licenses and certifications
  • Physical capability to respond to emergency situations, including boarding and disembarking fire apparatus
  • Availability for 24-hour duty when needed
  • Periodic travel within and outside City limits
  • Additional certifications such as Instructor license 1A/1B or Fire and Emergency Services Instructor 1 NFPA Standard 1041 preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in diverse environments
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, healthcare, or related field
  • Four years of recent experience as Registered Nurse, Paramedic, or Physician’s Assistant, including two years in fire service pre-hospital care or emergency room
  • Alternatively, Associate’s degree in nursing, education, fire science, or related field with five years paramedic/physician assistant experience and two years classroom teaching
  • Knowledge of EMS principles, medical theory, infection control, legal and ethical guidelines
  • Skilled in EMS curriculum development and instruction
  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to develop and teach practical and theoretical EMS courses
  • Proficient in EMS data analysis and program evaluation
  • Experienced in managing public health programs and partnerships

Job Duties

  • Work in close collaboration with the Deputy Fire Chief to develop and implement EMS standards and practices
  • Ensure certified personnel remain current in professional, legal, and ethical standards
  • Conduct patient care and EMS data analysis
  • Develop and conduct EMS training courses
  • Collaborate with department personnel and outside agencies to deliver training programs
  • Ensure compliance with Alameda County EMS policies and California State regulations
  • Maintain EMS training records and ensure OSHA and Cal-OSHA compliance
  • Serve as the Department Infection Control Officer
  • Manage public health programs and partnerships
  • Provide Emergency Medical Dispatch oversight
  • Coordinate investigations of EMS-related complaints
  • Manage the controlled substance medication program
  • Liaise with Alameda County EMS Agency Medical Director
  • Review and recommend policy amendments
  • Participate in EMS and Training division goal development
  • Support Deputy Fire Chief
  • Manage strategic national stockpile CHEMPACK program
  • Manage EMS supplies inventory
