Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • graduation from an IDPH or NREMT-P approved paramedic program
  • at least two years of experience in emergency medical services or hospital emergency department setting
  • valid Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-P Certification
  • submission of a letter of good standing from an IDPH approved EMS system
  • ability to obtain Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications within one year of employment
  • preferred but not required additional certifications in pediatric pre-hospital care and trauma life support
  • willingness to work night shifts from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and every other or third weekend
  • commitment to remain in position for a minimum of six months before applying for position changes

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate
  • graduate of IDPH or NREMT-P approved paramedic program
  • minimum of two years experience in EMS or hospital emergency department setting
  • Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-P Certification
  • must submit a letter of good standing from an Illinois Department of Public Health approved EMS system
  • obtain PALS and ACLS certifications within one year of start date
  • recommended certifications include PEPP, APLS, NRP/NALS, BTLS/PHTLS

Job Duties

  • Evaluate patient's progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to interventions, treatments, and therapies
  • recommend revisions in care plans based on changes in patient needs
  • anticipate and effectively intervene in impending emergent situations
  • respond, assess, and treat non-inpatient patients using BLS and escalate to ACLS or Code Blue as necessary
  • serve as Code Blue Team responder
  • act as Decontamination Team first responder and initiate Decontamination Response Plan
  • serve as integral member of Trauma Response Team
  • communicate with family and multidisciplinary team to identify healthcare needs and status changes
  • utilize appropriate resources for referrals or consultations
  • stay current with EMS National scope of practice and healthcare literature
  • demonstrate knowledge and competency with chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization protocols
  • assist with education and training of EMT students, registered nurses, medical students, residents, and other trainees
