Job Description
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a globally recognized environmental nonprofit dedicated to protecting the lands and waters on which all life depends. Founded in 1951, TNC has grown from a small grassroots organization into one of the most effective conservation organizations worldwide. With over a million members, hundreds of scientists, and a diverse team of staff and partners, TNC drives innovative, science-based solutions to address some of the world's toughest environmental challenges. Rooted firmly in its mission and values, the organization fosters an inclusive workplace culture that values respect for all people, communities, and cultures, and it encourages contributors from varied backgrounds to join its efforts. TNC offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package that supports health, well-being, and professional growth, alongside a flexible work environment aimed at balancing work and life needs.
The Culture & Operations Director role is a pivotal leadership position within TNC's Hawai'i and Palmyra Business Unit (BU). Reporting to the State Deputy Director, this role is responsible for enhancing organizational effectiveness, strengthening people and culture support, and ensuring operational alignment amid significant organizational changes. The Director acts as a cross-functional integrator, translating division-wide strategies into clear, practical practices, communication strategies, and operational systems tailored to the BU's unique needs. This includes leading culture and engagement initiatives to promote a high-performance, connected, and healthy work environment, driving operational excellence through improved workflows, clarified roles, and strengthened internal controls.
Additionally, the Director partners closely with Finance, People, Operations, and Program teams to ensure smooth coordination and execution of division initiatives. This leadership position plays a crucial role in change management, coaching teams and leaders through organizational shifts and facilitating resolution of risks and issues that may arise. Although not a finance technical expert, the role includes finance-adjacent leadership, helping staff understand core processes and the impact of finance changes on operations. The position is based in Honolulu, with an expectation of on-site presence two to three days a week, and offers a competitive salary range of $99,300 to $106,230, dependent on location, experience, and qualifications.
This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to conservation efforts by ensuring the internal health and effectiveness of TNC's Hawai'i and Palmyra operations. The candidate will be instrumental in shaping the culture, operational systems, and cross-functional collaboration needed to advance TNC's mission locally and globally. Ideal applicants are experienced leaders with strong communication, project management capabilities, and a passion for driving positive organizational change within a mission-driven environment.
