Job Description
Mission Waco is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering marginalized individuals and communities through a variety of community development initiatives. Established in Waco, Texas, the organization focuses on fostering sustainable change by addressing the root causes of poverty, supporting community development efforts, and nurturing leadership within the region. Known for its commitment to Christian Community Development principles, Mission Waco combines faith-based values with practical approaches to help create lasting impact. The organization's programs encompass education, health, economic development, and community engagement, all of which serve to uplift underserved populations and help them achieve a better quality of life.
The Director of Events and Communication at Mission Waco plays a crucial role within the Advancement team, reporting directly to the Associate Executive Director of Advancement. This full-time exempt position is designed for a dynamic and dedicated individual who excels in managing both fundraising events and communication strategies. The role involves comprehensive oversight and coordination of major fundraising events such as the organization's Golf Tournament, Style Show, Champs Breakfast, and the Annual Fundraising Banquet. Beyond event management, this position also includes responsibilities related to public relations and media engagement, making it pivotal in shaping and conveying Mission Waco's message to a wider audience.
In this role, the Director ensures excellence in event execution by managing all phases of event planning from inception through completion. This includes budget management aligned with overall Advancement goals, donor engagement related to events, and stewarding sponsors and event underwriters effectively across all platforms including print, digital, and social media. Strong organizational skills are critical, as the position requires maintaining detailed records and tracking the benefits and recognition extended to sponsors. The Director also has supervisory responsibilities that include managing a part-time Social Media Coordinator and coordinating work-study students, interns, and volunteers engaged in Advancement efforts.
Communication and media relations are key components of the job. The Director of Events and Communication builds and maintains robust relationships with local and regional media outlets, assists in drafting press releases, and creates media kits that promote the organization's events and initiatives. The role further supports the Advancement team by contributing to donor stewardship, participating in leadership and communication development programs offered by Mission Waco, and guiding interns within the advancement office.
The ideal candidate will possess strong skills in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with design and social media tools like Canva. Preferred skills include proficiency in digital marketing platforms such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign and experience with graphic design. Candidates with 1-2 years of event management and marketing experience are required, while those with 3-5 years in communications, marketing, or event management are preferred. An Associate’s degree is the minimum education requirement, with a Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred.
Effective communication skills are essential. The Director must be able to communicate appropriately and compassionately under pressure, exemplify Mission Waco's values, and have excellent interpersonal skills. The individual should be a strategic thinker with mature Christian faith and emotional maturity to handle sensitive and confidential information. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary to accommodate events that may occur in the evenings or weekends. Physical ability to perform moderate lifting and adapt to a fast-paced, high-pressure environment is required. Most importantly, the candidate must be passionate about Mission Waco’s mission to empower marginalized communities and demonstrate a strong commitment to addressing poverty and serving under-resourced populations.
