Job Description

Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island is a nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the nutritional and special needs of older adults and other vulnerable populations to help them maintain their independence. Established in 1969, the organization has been serving the Rhode Island community for over five decades, providing essential meal services from Westerly to Woonsocket. Each day, the staff and volunteers deliver approximately 1,500 nutritious meals to home-bound seniors, ensuring they receive the food and social interaction necessary for a healthy and independent lifestyle. Beyond the core Home-Delivered Meal Program, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island offers several additional programs including the Capital City Cafe Program, which provides meals in a community setting; the Restaurant Voucher Program, which allows seniors to dine out; the Pet Food Program, which assists with feeding pets of seniors; and the Senior Wish Program, aimed at fulfilling special wishes for older adults in need.

The position of Delivery Driver plays a crucial role in supporting the day-to-day operations of Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island’s Home Delivered Meal Program. This part-time role, offering $16.00 per hour, involves delivering meals safely and efficiently to home-bound seniors, ensuring sufficient entrées and cold packs are available for each recipient. The Delivery Driver also conducts safety checks during meal deliveries to identify any concerns or issues the senior clients might be facing, thus contributing to their well-being beyond just nutrition. This role additionally provides a valuable opportunity for socialization to a population that may otherwise feel isolated. Core working hours for this position are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. Additional duties include delivering menus, greeting cards, and other informational materials; maintaining cleanliness of the delivery vehicle; reporting any vehicle damage; delivering emergency shelf-stable or frozen meals when needed; and adhering to all rules and regulations defined in the Employee Handbook and Driver Rules and Regulations. The Delivery Driver is also expected to attend staff meetings and special events, fostering team collaboration and engagement with the organization. This position demands a high level of dedication, energy, and a positive attitude, along with the ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 20 pounds and climbing stairs. The work environment focuses on compassion and commitment to improving the lives of older adults through dependable meal delivery and friendly interaction. The Delivery Driver is a frontline ambassador for Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island, directly impacting the organization's mission by ensuring clients receive their meals timely and safely while feeling cared for and connected to the community.
