Job Description
Petro Star Inc. is a reputable company operating as the refining division of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC), an Inupiat-owned corporation established through the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. ASRC and Petro Star Inc. are committed to creating a supportive, inclusive, and drug-free workplace where all employees are treated with respect and fairness. The company values diversity and is an Equal Opportunity Employer, providing equal consideration to all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, disability, protected veteran status, or any other legally protected status. Petro Star Inc. embodies a strong community-focused ethos and enhances economic development within the Native Alaskan community through its dedicated workforce and operational excellence.
This full-time, temporary position for a Deli Clerk/Cashier at Petro Star Inc. offers an hourly wage starting at $18.00 per hour and includes an attractive sign-on bonus totaling $1,000, disbursed in two installments; $250 after 30 days of employment and $750 after six months, rewarding commitment and service longevity. The role features a consistent and manageable work schedule based on a standard five days, eight hours per day workweek.
The Deli Clerk/Cashier role is a dynamic and customer-centered position that integrates responsibilities from both the food service and retail cashier fields. The primary focus of the position is providing customers with high-quality deli products prepared according to established recipes, ensuring food safety, and delivering exceptional and friendly customer service. The role demands a blend of culinary preparation skills, attention to food merchandising, and the ability to manage transactional duties efficiently at the point of sale. Employees in this role are responsible for engaging customers in a professional manner, accurately processing various forms of payments, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment.
Key operational responsibilities of the Deli Clerk include prepping fresh deli food, maintaining hot display cases with ample product, adhering to safe food handling practices, and ensuring that the deli area is consistently clean and organized. The cashier duties incorporate operating cash registers, managing sales transactions, including fuel purchases, handling age-restricted products such as alcohol and tobacco in compliance with state laws, and safeguarding company assets.
The role also extends to light maintenance duties such as snow shoveling, general cleaning including sweeping, mopping, and restroom sanitation, as well as maintaining safe shopping conditions. Additional important tasks may involve operating and monitoring gas pump dispensers, assisting in clean-up activities for fuel spills, and dispensing propane safely under established safety protocols. Effective communication with management and team members, handling customer complaints professionally, and completing all necessary daily paperwork are integral to this role.
To qualify for this position, applicants must be at least 21 years old to comply with Alaska’s laws on alcohol and tobacco sales. Successful candidates are expected to complete several mandatory training programs within the first 30 days of employment, including the TAP® Certification for alcohol service, the We Card program for tobacco sales prevention, propane handling training, and a state food handling course. Previous experience in deli services and cash register operation is preferred though on-the-job training is provided.
This opportunity at Petro Star Inc. represents a fulfilling role for individuals who enjoy interacting with people, value teamwork, and are committed to delivering excellent customer service in a safe and clean environment. Candidates who demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a positive attitude will thrive in this position. Petro Star Inc. offers robust benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, disability coverage, paid time off and sick leave, along with a comprehensive 401(k) plan with company matching, ensuring employees’ well-being and financial security.
