Job Description
G&A Museum Operations Mantua LLC operates the Edelman Fossil Park & Museum located in Mantua Township, New Jersey, in partnership with Rowan University. The museum is a unique educational and natural history destination dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of fossils and the Earth’s ancient past. As a world-class institution, Edelman Fossil Park & Museum combines scientific research, public education, and community engagement to offer visitors an enriching experience connecting them to the natural history of the region. The facility includes modern amenities such as a reception area, private offices, conference rooms, a kitchenette, a team lounge, and an outdoor patio overlooking a four-acre lake, creating an inviting, comfortable environment for both visitors and staff. The museum prides itself on its mission to “Discover the Past. Protect the Future.” and strives to maintain high standards of operation, cleanliness, and visitor satisfaction.
The role of the Day Porter is integral to the daily operations at the Edelman Fossil Park & Museum. This part-time position involves providing essential cleaning and maintenance services to ensure the museum and park environment are pristine, safe, and welcoming at all times. The Day Porter is responsible for pre-opening preparations as well as ongoing cleaning throughout the day, including keeping restrooms stocked and sanitary, responding promptly to spills or cleaning emergencies, and maintaining inventory of janitorial supplies. This position requires someone with a keen eye for detail, a commitment to quality work, and the ability to work independently while contributing to a positive visitor experience.
In addition to routine cleaning duties, the Day Porter may also support daytime events held at the museum, providing essential services to help these occasions run smoothly. The individual in this role must maintain a neat and professional appearance, interact courteously with guests, and ensure that their work does not interfere with visitor enjoyment. The position often requires physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 75 pounds regularly. Although primarily a weekend role on the first shift, occasional weekday work is necessary to cover staff shortages or special events. Some duties may involve working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
This role is ideally suited for someone with prior experience in cleaning or custodial roles, particularly in museums, parks, nature centers, or similar environments. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, including specialized floor machines, is beneficial. The Day Porter must be capable of following written procedures, safety protocols, and product instructions closely, demonstrating a commitment to health and safety standards. Flexibility with hours, including availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays, is required. Above all, the successful candidate shares the museum’s dedication to education and preservation, thriving in a team-oriented, purpose-driven, and vibrant workplace. This is an excellent opportunity to join a respected institution that values diversity, inclusion, and offers a supportive work environment that fosters professional growth.
