The role of Day Porter at ABM specifically focuses on maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in educational environments such as K-12 schools, colleges, and university campuses. This position is an excellent entry point for individuals new to the workforce or those returning after a break, offering on-the-job training with no prior experience or formal education required. As a Day Porter, the individual will be responsible for general cleaning duties in designated areas, ensuring that classrooms, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, stairways, and other parts of these educational facilities are kept orderly and hygienic. The job fosters a proactive approach to maintaining the physical environment by utilizing approved cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and efficiently.

This role is designed for someone who values reliability and attention to detail, is willing to take on physical work, and can communicate effectively with clients, co-workers, and supervisors. Duties include sweeping, mopping, spill cleanup, trash removal, recycling, dusting, polishing surfaces, cleaning glass and windows, and performing a variety of seasonal outdoor maintenance tasks such as leaf raking, grass cutting, and snow removal. The Day Porter is also responsible for identifying and reporting any major or minor repairs needed to the facility management team.

Job Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

  • No high school diploma, GED or college degree required

  • Prior customer service experience is an advantage

Job Duties

  • Clean and maintain assigned area including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, and stairways
  • Sweep, remove debris, clean spills, and mop floors in designated areas
  • Regularly check trash receptacles and empty as needed
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage
  • Notify lead cleaner or manager about repairs or additions needed
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with clients, co-workers, and supervisors
  • Collect, consolidate, and separate recycling into proper receptacles
  • Clean and dust desks, chairs, tables, furniture, fixtures, doors, sills, floors, ceilings, and walls
  • Polish hard surfaces such as woodwork and stainless steel
  • Wipe and clean tabletops, chairs, and equipment in food areas
  • Move cabinets, boxes, furniture, crates, and equipment manually or by using hand trucks
  • Clean interior partition glass, windows, glass partitions, and mirrors
  • Sweep walks, rake leaves, cut grass, remove snow, and perform seasonal tasks
  • Maintain cleanliness and polish restrooms as needed
  • Comply with safety, security, compliance, and quality standards and procedures
