Job Description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a pioneering leader in cloud computing technology, providing scalable and reliable infrastructure that supports millions of customers globally. As a subsidiary of Amazon, AWS offers a diverse range of cloud services including storage, computing power, and networking, helping businesses innovate and grow with state-of-the-art technology solutions. The AWS Infrastructure Services division is dedicated to designing, planning, delivering, and operating the physical infrastructure that powers AWS’s global network of data centers. These data centers are critical to maintaining the uninterrupted operation and security of cloud services, ensuring customers have continuous access to cutting-edge technology with exceptional reliability and efficiency.

The Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) role is a vital position within the Data Center Engineering Operations Team at AWS. This role requires hands-on leadership and deep technical expertise to ensure that all critical electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety systems within the data center operate at peak performance. Responsibilities include planned preventative maintenance, emergency response, and daily corrective actions to sustain maximum operational efficiency. The CE acts as the key technical authority on-site, collaborating closely with Engineering Operations Technicians (EOTs), third-party vendors, and facility management teams to maintain the integrity and availability of essential infrastructure elements such as switchgear, generators, UPS systems, cooling towers, and building management systems.

This role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to manage complex facility systems under high-pressure conditions. Chief Engineers are also tasked with conducting root cause analyses of equipment failures, providing training and guidance to technicians, developing and implementing standard operating procedures, and supporting infrastructure expansion projects. The CE position may involve working outside regular business hours, including on-call emergency responses, emphasizing the importance of flexibility and commitment to facility uptime.

Beyond its technical scope, this role has a significant impact on AWS’s ability to meet its objectives of safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency. The Chief Engineer collaborates with IT managers and business leaders to coordinate projects, optimize capacity, and ensure compliance with all safety protocols. Additionally, this role involves contributing to reports and analyses that benchmark building performance and guide continuous improvement efforts.

Candidates for this role should be prepared for physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy equipment, navigating ladders and confined spaces, and adhering to personal protective equipment requirements. Travel is an integral aspect of this position, with travel expected to various AWS data center sites for training and operational support. Flexibility to temporarily work at alternative sites during training or until the assigned facility becomes fully operational is essential.

Joining AWS as a Data Center Chief Engineer offers a unique opportunity to be part of an innovative, inclusive, and dynamic work culture that values bold ideas and technical excellence. Individuals in this role will contribute to a critical infrastructure that empowers businesses worldwide, supporting AWS’s mission to keep the cloud running smoothly, securely, and efficiently.
