Job Description
Dancewave is a vibrant and socially conscious dance education nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 1995 by Diane Jacobowitz, Dancewave is committed to providing comprehensive access to a community dance experience that fosters individuality and whole-person development for people of all ages within New York City and beyond. The organization proudly serves a diverse audience of over 6,000 students annually, cultivating a nurturing and inclusive environment that welcomes individuals across various abilities, sexual orientations, racial identities, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Dancewave's offerings include a wide range of dance performances, youth performing ensembles, dance educator training workshops, dance residencies, college readiness events, and subsidized studio rentals. Its unique Dancewave Culture Model (DCM) integrates social-emotional learning and restorative practices to empower students through participatory learning and decision making. This model encourages students to become Young Artist Citizens who lead their own learning journey and actively contribute to their communities.
The company is now seeking a part-time Events House Manager to join their team at the Dancewave Center located at 182 Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217. This role is essential in supporting the Rentals Program, which caters to special event bookings such as intimate performances ranging from 25 to 100 audience members and birthday parties designed primarily for New York City families. The program focuses on youth programming and typically handles approximately 10-20 bookings each year.
As the Events House Manager, you will play a critical role in overseeing the execution and flow of events and ensuring that the physical spaces used are well-maintained and restored appropriately after each event. This position reports directly to the Facilities and Rentals Manager and involves weekend hours, typically Friday and Saturday evenings as well as Sunday mornings during birthday party events. The role offers a competitive compensation of $30 per hour.
Your responsibilities will include opening the facility on time before guests arrive, maintaining cleanliness and readiness of all event spaces, managing set-up and break-down activities including protective measures for the studio floor, seating arrangements for audiences, and preparation of the lobby and dressing rooms. Additionally, you will coordinate with various stakeholders such as renters, teaching artists, and event staff to ensure smooth transitions and successful event delivery.
Effective time management and communication skills are vital for success in this position. You'll provide guidance during rental periods, supervise technical equipment usage during rehearsals, and assist in managing the timing and flow of children’s birthday parties. The role requires the ability to communicate with a diverse range of people, maintain order in a fast-paced environment, and resolve problems as they arise.
The ideal candidate will have one to two years of customer service experience, preferably with exposure to working with youth, and a passionate interest in arts and nonprofit administration. Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to fostering community connections through dance education are essential. This is an in-person position requiring the ability to lift up to 20 pounds and work primarily on evenings and weekends at the Dancewave Center.
Dancewave is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities per the Americans with Disabilities Act. Prospective candidates are encouraged to apply if they thrive in environments that celebrate diversity and inclusion and if they are eager to contribute to a mission dedicated to social-emotional growth, artistic integrity, and community engagement through dance.
