Job Description
The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is a prominent institution dedicated to providing quality education and fostering personal and professional growth among its diverse student body. With multiple campuses and centers, CCAC offers a wide array of programs and services designed to meet the educational and community needs of the region. As an organization, CCAC emphasizes a supportive work environment, valuing collaboration, community engagement, and continuous improvement across all departments. The Housekeeping Department plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and aesthetic appeal of the college campuses to support the institution's mission of delivering exceptional educational experiences.
CCAC is currently seeking a dedicated Custodian/Laborer for a Regular Full-Time position at the Main Campus within the Housekeeping Department. This role is vital for supporting the physical plant services college-wide, ensuring that all campuses and centers under the supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor are maintained at optimal conditions. The successful candidate will complete a post-offer, pre-employment medical examination and a performance evaluation as part of the onboarding process.
The Custodian/Laborer position requires the individual to perform a variety of housekeeping, groundskeeping, and general maintenance tasks. This includes routine cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, shampooing carpets, and cleaning various indoor fixtures like walls, vents, furniture, and restrooms. Outdoors, responsibilities extend to grounds maintenance like grass cutting, gardening, snow removal, and minor construction-related tasks such as painting and fence construction. General maintenance duties involve the use of hand tools to perform minor repairs, equipment cleaning, and setup or relocation of furniture and supplies.
This role demands physical stamina and the ability to work in varying weather conditions, handling tasks that involve lifting, carrying, and moving heavy materials up to 50 pounds or more occasionally. The working hours are Monday through Friday from 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM, with potential additional hours including evenings and weekends to meet departmental needs. The hourly wage for this position is $15.95, under the SEIU A salary grade. The position does not currently offer remote work options and requires in-person attendance.
CCAC offers an exceptional benefits package that underscores the college's commitment to its employees' well-being and professional development. Benefits include comprehensive health coverage with a low out-of-pocket network, generous time off with options such as a four-day summer workweek, retirement planning with a 403(b) plan offering up to a 10% employer match or a state-defined benefit pension, group life insurance, disability coverage, and access to flexible spending accounts. Employees also gain access to wellness support through an Employee Assistance Program, educational benefits including tuition waivers and reimbursement, and exclusive employee perks and rewards. Additionally, free employee parking is provided to ease the commuting experience.
Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED preferred, with the ability to read, write, and perform basic math essential. A valid Pennsylvania driver’s license is required if the role involves driving. Physical requirements include the ability to climb using various apparatus, handle exposure to dirt and grease, and perform physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, and lifting heavy items. Clearances for criminal records and child abuse history are mandatory upon employment. This position offers a unique opportunity for individuals looking to contribute directly to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming educational environment, supporting the mission and values of CCAC while enjoying a comprehensive benefits package and a supportive workplace culture.
