Job Description

Quinnipiac University is a prestigious private, coeducational institution located in Hamden, Connecticut, approximately 90 minutes north of New York City and two hours from Boston. The university boasts an enrollment of roughly 9,700 students across more than 100 degree programs spanning numerous disciplines, including Business, Communications, Education, Computing and Engineering, Health Sciences, Law, Medicine, Nursing, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Quinnipiac is distinguished not only by its academic breadth but also by its vibrant Division I athletic program, which has earned multiple conference titles and national championships, notably a 2023 NCAA National Championship in ice hockey and consistent high-level achievement in women’s rugby and basketball.

Quinnipiac University is recognized nationally for excellence in public opinion research through the Quinnipiac University Poll, and the institution consistently earns accolades from U.S. News & World Report, Princeton Review, and The Wall Street Journal, which named it the 51st best college in the nation and second in Connecticut. This recognition reflects the university’s dedication to delivering exceptional graduation rates, impactful salaries for graduates, state-of-the-art learning facilities, comprehensive career preparation, and diverse learning opportunities. The campus is undergoing significant expansion and renewal, enhancing its facilities with new buildings like the recently opened South Quad and developing innovative strategic partnerships to better serve both traditional and adult learners.

As an employer, Quinnipiac University values inclusivity, community engagement, and a forward-thinking spirit. Its core values emphasize a lifelong commitment to student success, passionate care for the community, and bold leadership in shaping the university’s future. These principles foster a vibrant campus culture where all community members are welcomed and valued.

This career opportunity is with Quinnipiac University’s Facilities Department for a full-time Custodian/Trash Truck Driver position located at the Mount Carmel and York Hill campuses in Hamden, CT. The role is integral to maintaining the physical condition and cleanliness of the university buildings, grounds, and related facilities. It combines typical custodial duties such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, cleaning windows and lavatories, polishing metals and woods, and stripping and waxing floors with the specialized responsibility of driving the trash truck. This unique blend of tasks helps ensure a safe, attractive, and functional environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

The Custodian/Trash Truck Driver will perform a variety of maintenance duties including minor preventive repairs, groundskeeping near buildings, shoveling snow, and assisting with event setup. The position requires attention to detail, the ability to operate hand tools, and physical stamina as the role involves working from ladders and handling cleaning materials. Employees must be able to manage routine tasks such as locking/unlocking premises, changing ceiling tiles and light bulbs, spot painting, and unclogging fixtures with appropriate tools.

This position offers a union starting hourly wage of $21.21 and operates primarily on a Thursday to Monday schedule from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, with adjusted summer hours from Monday to Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm. The university is committed to a comprehensive benefits package for full-time staff, including tuition remission and a supportive, inclusive workplace environment. Prospective candidates must have a Connecticut Driver’s License and prior experience in custodial and maintenance tasks. Applicants must complete a physical demands exam, pre-employment drug screening, and background check as part of the hiring process. This role embodies Quinnipiac University’s commitment to a quality campus experience and provides an essential service to the university community, making it an excellent opportunity for dedicated individuals seeking stable employment with a respected institution.
