Job Description
The hiring establishment is a school district facility dedicated to providing a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment conducive for learning and educational activities. Operating in the education sector, the district manages the upkeep and functionality of its buildings and grounds to ensure that students, staff, and visitors enjoy an environment that supports the educational mission. They prioritize cleanliness, safety, and proactive maintenance to uphold standards consistent with school district policies. This establishment is committed to fostering a cooperative workplace culture and offers a twelve-month position in facilities maintenance with a salary scale aligned with the Local 560 negotiated contract ranging from step 1 to step 16, reflecting experience and tenure within the position.
The role available is a Maintenance/Custodial Custodian position under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities. The position requires checking and securing facilities, performing a broad range of janitorial duties such as sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, cleaning carpets and upholstery, washing walls and windows, and attending to general upkeep tasks like replacing light bulbs and removing graffiti. Aside from indoor responsibilities, the custodian also manages external grounds-keeping tasks including clearing snow and debris, applying ice melting chemicals, and maintaining outdoor safety.
Moreover, custodians support operational setup and breakdown of rooms, assist in deliveries and material distribution, and participate in waste management including recycling. This multifaceted role demands knowledge and skill in the use of hand tools, power equipment, and various cleaning machines. The position requires physical stamina to work in varying weather conditions and the ability to lift heavy items over 50 pounds. Furthermore, it involves cooperation with school personnel, ongoing training participation, and adherence to established cleaning and maintenance schedules. This comprehensive job also includes a probationary period complemented by periodic performance evaluations to ensure effectiveness and fit within the organization. The custodian thus plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, clean, and operational environment that supports the educational function of the school district.
