Job Description

The University of Missouri Campus Facilities Operations department is a vital part of the university, dedicated to creating a safe, efficient, and inspiring environment that fosters education, research, and service excellence. This department oversees the management and upkeep of campus facilities and infrastructure, delivering a wide range of services including Engineering, Custodial Operations, Maintenance, Construction, Inventory Management, Sustainability, and Project Management. Their main goal is to ensure seamless daily operations that support the dynamic needs of the Mizzou community, allowing students, faculty, and staff to thrive in a well-maintained and safe campus setting. The university prides itself on its commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and sustainability, making it a prominent employer in the region with a strong focus on community impact and environmental responsibility.

The Custodian II role in Campus Facilities Operations is a critical position focused on maintaining cleanliness and orderliness within assigned areas across the university. The position involves executing various custodial tasks using proper methods, equipment, and procedures to ensure that facilities are kept in excellent condition. Responsibilities include mopping, scrubbing, sweeping, and vacuuming floors; emptying trash; cleaning and restocking restrooms daily; cleaning water fountains, lounges, and stairwells; and reporting or replacing lightbulbs as needed. Custodians are essential to the day-to-day functionality and appearance of the campus, contributing to a positive and safe environment for all occupants.

The role offers flexible shift options including early morning shifts from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend work; or a longer weekend shift from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The salary for this position starts at $17.12 per hour, classified under Grade GGS-C. Employment is contingent on passing a physical examination to confirm the candidate possesses the physical capabilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.

Ideal candidates will have at least one year of general maintenance and/or custodial experience, possess basic reading and writing skills, and may be required to have a valid driver’s license for certain positions. The job demands physical stamina and agility including bending, squatting, reaching, stretching, walking, standing, sitting, grasping, twisting, climbing stairs, step stools, and ladders. Candidates must be capable of lifting and carrying objects weighing between 25 and 50 lbs. Work may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, wearing a backpack vacuum for long periods, using protective masks and hearing protection, and working around dust and cleaning chemicals. Good physical coordination and mechanical aptitude are important to successfully perform these duties.

While this position is not eligible for University benefits, employees may choose to participate in the Tax Deferred Annuity Plan (403b). Joining the University of Missouri means becoming part of an inclusive and equal opportunity employer that values diversity and accessibility. This position offers a chance to make a meaningful impact on the university community by ensuring facilities are maintained to high standards, supporting the university’s mission to provide an outstanding educational and research environment. It is a rewarding role for individuals who take pride in their work and want to contribute to the ongoing success of a respected educational institution.
