HHSC is now recruiting for the position of Custodian II at the Kerrville State Hospital, located in Kerrville, Texas. Kerrville State Hospital is part of the HHSC psychiatric hospital system, which consists of nine psychiatric hospitals, a youth residential treatment center, and multiple state-supported living centers. These facilities provide cutting-edge, recovery-oriented, and science-based mental health care, with accreditation from The Joint Commission, signaling the highest standards in patient treatment and facility management. The Custodian II plays an essential role in maintaining the safety, sanitation, and overall cleanliness of these critical care environments where patients with complex psychiatric needs receive treatment.

The Custodian II at Kerrville State Hospital is a journey-level position responsible for performing moderately complex custodial tasks. The incumbent will clean, dust, disinfect, and sanitize hospital spaces to ensure a safe and healthy setting for patients, staff, and visitors. This role requires operating specialized floor maintenance equipment such as buffers, strippers, extractors, and vacuums, and includes responsibility for restocking cleaning supplies and assisting in minor maintenance and building repairs. The custodian must conduct inspections to assess cleanliness and identify necessary repairs, maintaining custodial equipment in good working order.

The position demands a diligent and dependable individual who works well both independently and as part of a team. It requires a capacity to work irregular hours, including potentially extended shifts or overtime, as the hospital operates 24/7. While telework is not an option for this role, applicants should be comfortable with up to 20 percent travel and working in maximum security locations when required, which may entitle them to additional pay. The salary range for this full-time, nonexempt day shift position is $2,694.70 to $3,269.08 monthly.

Job Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Six months work experience in custodial or environmental services preferred
  • Must pass fingerprint criminal background check
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen
  • Must pass registry checks including Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System and others
  • Males aged 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policy
  • Must be able to work extended, irregular hours
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand and walk on hard floors for prolonged periods
  • Ability to work in maximum security locations if required

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Six months of custodial or environmental services experience preferred
  • Experience in nursing home, hospital, residential facility, or hotel custodial work desirable
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to work irregular hours and extended shifts
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment safely
  • Good communication and teamwork skills

Job Duties

  • Attend work regularly and work assigned shifts including overtime as needed
  • Perform custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning windows and light fixtures
  • Clean and maintain floors, restrooms, nurse stations, and other areas according to safety and procedural standards
  • Maintain interior and exterior building cleanliness, empty trash, and report repair needs
  • Coach and assist other custodians as necessary
  • Inspect buildings and areas for cleanliness and minor repairs, performing maintenance when required
  • Complete documentation accurately and maintain inventory and equipment records
