The role of Custodian at OU HSC is vital in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of offices, residence halls, classrooms, and public access areas across the campus. This position involves performing routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, waxing, and polishing floors to ensure a hygienic and pleasant environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike.

Beyond typical cleaning duties, custodians are responsible for maintaining and sanitizing lavatories and restrooms, restocking necessary paper products, and managing waste disposal. The role also includes locking and unlocking various facilities to carry out cleaning duties and vacuuming carpeted areas where applicable. Additionally, custodians are expected to rearrange furniture to its original position in lounges and common areas, and during the winter months, may assist with snow removal from doorways and sidewalks, ensuring safe accessibility.

The position requires physical stamina and the ability to handle tasks such as lifting loads up to 100 pounds, prolonged standing and walking, repetitive arm movements, stooping, and bending, as well as exposure to odors, cleaning chemicals, and potentially disagreeable conditions. As an integral member of the campus community, custodians may be designated as essential personnel in emergency situations and could be required to remain on campus during weather or other emergency closures.

Job Duties

  • Cleans, sweeps, and dusts furniture and equipment
  • Collects and disposes of wastepaper and refuse
  • Mops, sweeps, waxes and polishes floors
  • Maintains and sanitizes lavatories and rest rooms
  • Restocks paper products in rest room and lavatories
  • Locks and unlocks offices, classrooms, and conference areas in order to clean
  • Vacuums carpeted areas where applicable
  • Rearranges furniture to original positions in lounges and common areas
  • May shovel snow from doorways and sidewalks
  • Performs various duties as needed in order to successfully fulfill the function of the position
