Job Description

California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) is a prestigious private university located in Thousand Oaks, California. Established in 1959, the university is committed to educating leaders for a global society who possess strong character and sound judgment. Cal Lutheran serves approximately 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students representing diverse backgrounds, cultures, and faiths, making it a vibrant educational community. As a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution, the university places high value on diversity and inclusion, striving to create a respectful and inclusive learning and work environment that honors individual differences and dignity. The university's mission emphasizes service and justice, preparing its students not only academically but also as responsible members of society. Cal Lutheran offers a broad range of academic programs and is deeply engaged in fostering a supportive environment both on and off campus for students, faculty, and staff.

The Custodian AM Shift role is integral to maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall upkeep of California Lutheran University's campus facilities. This part-time, non-exempt position (FTE 0.5) based at the Thousand Oaks campus is essential for ensuring that the university’s physical environment meets high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Working under the supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor and Lead Housekeeper, the Custodian is responsible for the upkeep of approximately 750,000 square feet of diverse spaces, which include office buildings, classrooms, laboratories, residential halls, cafeterias, conference rooms, and athletic venues.

In this role, the custodian independently executes a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing floors, cleaning carpets using extraction methods, dusting furniture and surfaces, sanitizing restrooms, replenishing supplies, and responding to on-call emergencies during shift hours. The role requires the use of commercial cleaning products, knowledge of Green Seal certified products and solvent-based chemicals, and the use of custodial equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, extractors, and pressure washers. Safety and adherence to specified cleaning procedures, including proper personal protective equipment use, are paramount.

The position demands strong interpersonal skills, as the custodian frequently interacts with students, faculty, staff, and visitors, maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor at all times. The Custodian must be adaptable, willing to work various shifts including weekends and overtime, and able to adjust work schedules for special campus programs, especially during summer periods. Physical endurance is necessary due to the nature of the duties involving standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, and handling equipment.

This position offers an hourly wage starting at $21.92 and provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to the upkeep and functionality of a dynamic university campus. The university supports ongoing employee training, especially related to safety and custodial procedures, ensuring that staff are well-prepared and work in a safe environment. Employees also benefit from being part of a community that values diversity, inclusivity, and service. Working at California Lutheran University means contributing to an educational institution that is committed to fostering leaders who are equipped to meet the demands of a global society.
