Job Description

The Custodian position is a vital role within a school district, tasked with ensuring that district facilities are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. Working under the supervision of the Custodial Services Supervisor or Principal, the custodian is responsible for routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and operational support that helps create a safe, welcoming, and efficient environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role requires a hands-on approach to maintaining both the interior and exterior areas of assigned campuses, including classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, playgrounds, and parking lots.

The position typically falls under a nonexempt employment status, indicating eligibility for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Although no specific educational requirements are mandated for this role, successful candidates should demonstrate the ability to understand and follow detailed instructions related to cleaning, safety, and minor maintenance tasks. The role demands physical stamina as custodians engage in frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and sometimes climbing. The work environment includes exposure to indoor and outdoor conditions, varying temperatures, and contact with cleaning chemicals, necessitating adherence to safety protocols.

Custodians play an essential part in fostering a healthy and conducive learning atmosphere by maintaining cleanliness and order throughout school facilities. Responsibilities include cleaning floors, windows, furniture, and equipment; disposing of waste properly; and maintaining inventories of cleaning supplies. They are also tasked with minor repairs and assisting with set up for lunchrooms or special events. Operational duties involve regulating building systems such as heat and air conditioning to optimize energy use while ensuring comfort for occupants.

Safety is a paramount concern in this role. Custodians must follow strict safety procedures while operating equipment such as buffers, vacuum cleaners, drills, and lawn maintenance tools. They must regularly inspect facilities for safety concerns and report issues that require attention from supervisors. The role demands keen attention to detail to ensure that all emergency exits and mechanical systems are functioning correctly each day.

This job involves working irregular hours at times, occasional prolonged shifts, and occasional outdoor work in challenging weather conditions. While the position requires no supervisory responsibilities, custodians must maintain emotional control under stress and be capable of working independently or as part of a broader custodial team.

Overall, this custodial role is fundamental to supporting the educational environment, making it an ideal opportunity for individuals with a strong work ethic, a commitment to maintaining facility standards, and the physical capability to handle the demands of building maintenance and cleaning.
