Job Description

The University of New Mexico is a prestigious public research university located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is renowned for providing quality education, fostering research initiatives, and engaging with the local community to promote academic excellence and innovation. The university is home to various departments and facilities, including the Athletics Department that manages state-of-the-art athletic venues and special event spaces. Team members working here are committed to supporting both student-athletes and the wider university community by ensuring a safe, clean, and efficient environment conducive to their activities and experiences.

The Athletics Facilities at the University of New Mexico are currently seeking on-call Custodians to support athletic sporting events and special events hosted at their venues. This role is designed to offer flexible, as-needed work opportunities primarily during evenings and weekends, matching the scheduling of most athletic events. The position offers an hourly wage of $15.00 and is classified as non-exempt staff. As an on-call custodian, individuals play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and functionality of the athletic facilities, which include locker rooms, seating areas, restrooms, and other event-related environments.

Responsibilities include general custodial tasks such as dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking supplies of paper and soap to ensure facilities are consistently presentable and hygienic for visitors and athletes alike. Custodians also handle routine maintenance of custodial equipment and supplies to ensure operational readiness. Waste management duties include emptying trash receptacles, properly disposing of trash in compactors or dumpsters, and bagging trash for disposal.

Custodians assist with facility access, unlocking doors for cleaning and making sure they are locked afterward to maintain security. They are responsible for communicating concerns or maintenance needs to the appropriate staff, including the submission of work orders and monitoring supply levels. For positions assigned to on-campus residence halls, custodians may also report issues related to residents. Safety is a top priority, and custodians are expected to use and maintain equipment carefully, while encouraging continuous improvements in workplace safety and environmental practices.

This role also offers opportunities to assist in training new custodial staff to ensure consistent execution of routine procedures. Additionally, custodians may take on seasonal duties or project-based cleaning functions, provide vendor access during cleaning operations, and occasionally assist with snow removal or light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs or adjusting furniture.

Applicants need a flexible schedule to accommodate mostly evening and weekend shifts. This on-call position does not guarantee a regular work schedule but provides an important support function to the university's Athletics Special Events department. The University of New Mexico is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to a diverse workforce and requires successful completion of a criminal background check and medical examination prior to employment. Benefits for this position include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as educational benefits such as tuition remission programs, making it a comprehensive and rewarding employment opportunity.
