Job Description
Vanderbilt University is a prestigious private research university located in Nashville, Tennessee. Known for its commitment to excellence in education, research, and public service, Vanderbilt blends a rich tradition with modern innovation. The university's Maintenance and Operations (VUMO) department plays a crucial role in ensuring that Vanderbilt's facilities maintain their high standards, contributing significantly to the overall campus environment and the university community's daily experience.
VUMO provides comprehensive facilities support encompassing construction, renovation, maintenance, housekeeping, grounds care, and utilities management. With an annual operating budget exceeding $100 million and a team of over 400 employees, the department manages a vast portfolio that includes about 5.8 million square feet of academic, administrative, residential, and recreational space across the campus, as well as 330 acres of registered arboretum grounds. The department also handles turf care for athletic fields, making sure that all aspects of campus facilities are well-maintained.
The role of Custodian within VUMO is essential to maintaining the high standard of cleanliness and presentation throughout the Vanderbilt campus. As an individual contributor, the Custodian performs general housekeeping and cleaning duties in various buildings. This position ensures that the university facilities are pristine, safe, and welcoming to students, staff, faculty, and visitors alike. The Custodian supports the broader facilities team by actively contributing to the upkeep of buildings through routine cleaning tasks, maintenance notifications, and inventory management of supplies. This role reports directly to the Housekeeping Supervisor and does not have supervisory responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of hands-on, detail-oriented work.
This position is ideal for individuals who take pride in maintaining clean environments and who understand that their contribution reflects on the university's image and daily life. While previous custodial or housekeeping experience is preferred, it is not required, making this position accessible to candidates who demonstrate a customer service-driven attitude and a willingness to learn. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, and having a valid driver’s license is advantageous but not mandatory.
Typical duties include cleaning restrooms, dusting and polishing furniture, emptying trash, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning light fixtures, and responding to custodial emergencies if required. The custodian is also responsible for inspecting areas for cleanliness and notifying supervisors of any maintenance needs. Other duties may extend to support tasks during university events and seasonal responsibilities like snow removal at building entrances. This variety of tasks ensures the person in this role plays a critical part in the ongoing operation and appeal of Vanderbilt University’s campus.
By joining Vanderbilt as a Custodian, individuals become part of a vital team dedicated to maintaining the physical foundation upon which the university’s academic and community life thrives. This work not only supports daily campus operations but also contributes to Vanderbilt’s image as a leading educational institution with a beautiful, well-maintained environment.
