Job Description
The YMCA of Greater Rochester is a well-established nonprofit organization dedicated to building healthy communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As part of the larger YMCA movement, the Greater Rochester branch is committed to providing inclusive programs and services that promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being for people of all ages and backgrounds. Known for its community-centered approach, the YMCA offers numerous opportunities for individuals to engage in sports, fitness, childcare, and educational activities while fostering a welcoming environment based on core values such as caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
The YMCA of Greater Rochester is currently seeking a dedicated and proactive Custodian to join their team at the Skalny Childcare Center located within the Schottland Family Branch. This part-time position works Monday through Friday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and offers $16.50 per hour along with a complimentary YMCA membership, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals looking for flexible evening work within a meaningful community organization.
In this role, custodians are essential in maintaining the cleanliness, hygiene, and general upkeep of the childcare facility, both indoors and outdoors. Reporting to the Buildings & Grounds Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring all areas such as bathrooms, locker rooms, offices, hallways, and other designated spaces are consistently clean and sanitary. Furthermore, this position requires performing minor maintenance tasks, assisting with event setups, and responding appropriately to emergencies when necessary. A key aspect of the role includes making relationship building the top priority by greeting members and visitors by name whenever possible and conveying the YMCA's mission, purpose, image, and core values at all times.
The custodial responsibilities extend beyond routine cleaning to include specialized tasks such as stripping and polishing floors, carpet cleaning, moving furniture, clearing snow, and reporting maintenance issues. Working at the YMCA offers a unique environment where professionalism, courtesy, teamwork, and community engagement are highly valued. Custodians must demonstrate the ability to work independently, possess strong communication skills, and be prepared to operate cleaning equipment and manage supplies responsibly.
This role also demands physical stamina, as custodians will be required to remain standing and moving for extended periods, work indoors and outdoors with exposure to varying environmental conditions, and lift weights up to 50 pounds repetitively. Candidates need to be comfortable handling cleaning chemicals and human body fluids as part of their daily duties. The YMCA fosters a respectful, supportive workplace culture that ensures equal employment opportunities for all applicants, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion regardless of race, gender, age, or other protected characteristics. This role is a vital part of maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment where children, families, and staff can thrive.
