The university values sustainability, equity, and integrity as foundational principles that guide its mission and daily operations. It is situated in a picturesque region known for its natural beauty and vibrant cultural scene, making it an exciting place to both work and study.
The position of Custodian at Sonoma State University is a vital role within the Facilities Management team. This is a full-time, staff employment role located onsite at the Sonoma campus, with working hours scheduled from Monday through Friday, 4 pm to 12:30 am. Reporting directly to the Campus Custodial and Events Supervisor, and receiving additional guidance from other team members, this role involves performing a comprehensive range of custodial duties in support of the upkeep and maintenance of campus buildings and associated facilities. The Custodian is responsible for a variety of areas including campus offices, classrooms, science laboratories, art rooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, locker rooms, food service venues, kitchens, restrooms, and performance halls.
The incumbent's work ensures the cleanliness, safety, and operational functionality of these campus areas, which directly contributes to a positive and welcoming environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The custodian will operate and maintain custodial equipment, utilize work order tracking systems, communicate effectively using two-way radios, and strictly adhere to safety protocols and procedures. This role requires not only physical activity but also a keen attention to detail and commitment to following verbal and written instructions.
Candidates are expected to have at least one year of custodial experience with proficiency in computer use, including basic Microsoft Office skills. Familiarity with Google Suite, computerized work control systems, and PeopleSoft is preferred. The ability to successfully complete a pre-placement health examination is required, along with possessing or obtaining a valid California Driver’s License for operating vehicles or equipment pertinent to the role.
This custodial position offers a competitive salary range between $3,461 and $4,752 per month, dependent on experience and qualifications, with step placement at hire not expected to exceed Step 6 ($3,822). As a full-time, non-exempt position, it holds the potential to transition to permanent status upon successful completion of a probationary period.
The university offers a generous benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, along with CalPERS retirement benefits. Employees benefit from a tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave, and 15 paid holidays annually. Moreover, Sonoma State University participates in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, providing additional financial advantages for eligible employees.
Sonoma State University embraces diversity and inclusion, ensuring equal opportunity employment without discrimination based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status, among other factors. The institution emphasizes safe and respectful work environments and participates in mandated reporting procedures as required by California law.
Overall, the Custodian role at Sonoma State University presents a meaningful opportunity for candidates who are dedicated to maintaining hygienic, safe, and pleasant campus environments while advancing their careers within a supportive and values-driven educational institution.
