Job Description
The City of Wichita, located in the heart of Kansas, is dedicated to serving its community by providing vital public services and maintaining public facilities that enrich the lives of its residents. As a large city government entity, it manages a wide range of departments and programs aimed at fostering civic engagement, lifelong learning, and community well-being. One of its important resources is the Advanced Learning Library, a dynamic hub of knowledge and community activity that serves as a beacon for education, cultural events, and public programs. The City of Wichita values reliable public servants who are committed to maintaining safe, accessible, and welcoming public spaces for all citizens to enjoy.
The City of Wichita is currently seeking a Custodial & Event Setup Assistant to join the Advanced Learning Library team in a permanent part-time role. This position plays a crucial behind-the-scenes role, ensuring that the library remains clean, safe, and well-prepared for a variety of public programs and events. The role operates on a fixed schedule from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, with potential adjustments when special events are scheduled outside regular hours. This position is not represented by a union and does not participate in E-Verify employment verification. The hourly wage is competitive and based on city policy and prior experience.
In this physically active and service-oriented role, the Custodial & Event Setup Assistant is responsible for setting up and tearing down event equipment, including tables, chairs, portable stages, and basic audio/visual systems. A significant part of the job is maintaining cleanliness inside and outside the library, which includes sweeping, mopping, restroom cleaning, emptying trash, and general upkeep of entryways and public areas. The assistant collaborates closely with library staff and interacts with the public to facilitate smooth event operations and uphold a clean, organized environment.
Success in this position requires physical stamina and the ability to lift and move heavy objects, sometimes with the assistance of a coworker, as well as the capability to work in confined spaces and on scaffolding when necessary. Additionally, understanding and interpreting floor plans for room setups is an essential skill. Strong communication skills and the ability to foster positive relationships with coworkers and the public are equally important to ensure a welcoming atmosphere.
The role reflects the City of Wichita's commitment to public service and inclusion, with an emphasis on a growth mindset and continuous learning. The position requires the Custodial & Event Setup Assistant to be dependable, attentive to detail, and ready to contribute to the library's mission of providing a safe, engaging environment that supports community learning and civic participation. Candidates who are physically active, reliable, and passionate about serving the community will find this role rewarding and essential to the success of the library's programs and events.
