The role of Herons Prep Cook is an integral part of the culinary operation, requiring a hands-on approach that involves participation in all facets of food production. The Prep Cook must lead by example, embodying the core values endorsed by the Executive Chef, including maintaining exemplary quality standards and sanitation practices. This position demands someone who can manage a clean, organized, and efficient workspace while supporting the kitchen's fast-paced environment. The Herons Prep Cook reports directly to the Chef De Cuisine and/or Sous Chef Team, playing a pivotal leadership role in the smooth execution of kitchen operations.

In this role, the Prep Cook will engage in various responsibilities including prepping ingredients for breakfast, lunch, and dinner services, performing butchering tasks, receiving food products, and ensuring overall kitchen sanitation. The Prep Cook is expected to work during peak hotel activity hours, demonstrating adaptability and stamina. Strong communication skills are essential to coordinate effectively with both the front of house and other culinary teams, ensuring a seamless guest dining experience. The candidate must maintain professional and respectful relationships with fellow associates, fostering a collaborative and motivated work environment.

Safety and security are critical aspects of this position. The Herons Prep Cook must consistently uphold all health and safety protocols to protect the well-being of guests and staff, as well as safeguard hotel assets. Physical demands of the job include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and stand or walk for extended periods during shifts. Maintaining a neat and professional appearance in line with The Umstead Hotel standards is also a key expectation.

Candidates seeking the Herons Prep Cook position should bring at least two years of experience, preferably in a fine dining hotel, restaurant, or country club setting. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with the capability to obtain and retain any government-mandated certifications or licenses.
