As a part of their mission, Smoky Mountain Kona Ice focuses on changing lives and giving back to the community. Their unique food trucks, recognized as some of the coolest in the Knoxville area, create an environment filled with excitement and joy, making every workday dynamic and engaging.
As a mobile vendor, Smoky Mountain Kona Ice interacts with the community daily—whether at neighborhood events, schools, corporate picnics, weddings, sporting events at the University of Tennessee, or large festivals at World’s Fair Park. The company prides itself on serving a broad range of events, creating an atmosphere where everyone looks forward to their arrival. Employees, called the Kona Ice Krew, are key to this vibrant experience and are essential in fostering the fun, fast-paced environment the company is known for.
The role offered caters to individuals who are motivated, charismatic, and passionate about delivering outstanding customer service. It is ideal for those who enjoy working with people of all ages, particularly children and large crowds. The position requires individuals who are honest, friendly, outgoing, and flexible, as the job location varies from day to day. Employees can expect a mix of responsibilities depending on whether they serve as Krew Members or advance to the role of Drivers/Caterers with more autonomy and responsibilities.
As a Kona Ice Krew Member, typically available to applicants aged 16 and above, responsibilities include maintaining a safe and pleasant work environment, collaborating with team members, and providing friendly, courteous service to customers. The Krew Member is also responsible for hygiene and sanitation compliance, prepping and stocking supplies, performing basic cleaning of trucks and the warehouse, and accurately completing documentation. Effective communication of maintenance and inventory needs is also essential to ensure smooth operations.
For those aged 18 and older, there is an opportunity to become a Kona Ice Driver/Caterer. This more advanced role comes with increased base pay and additional responsibilities such as independently running events from start to finish, safely driving Kona Ice trucks, acting as shift leaders, coordinating logistical details with clients, completing detailed vehicle checklists, and learning how to tow equipment. This role offers increased leadership and independence, reflecting trust and responsibility bestowed upon the driver.
Employees of Smoky Mountain Kona Ice enjoy a supportive and lively work environment with a flexible schedule that accommodates varied availability, including weekends and some holidays. Benefits include supplementary tips and bonuses, complimentary snacks and beverages during shifts, and advancement opportunities within the company. Drivers in particular can receive special incentives such as a guaranteed retention raise after 100 hours and a bonus upon meeting certain conditions.
