Job Description

The Department of Corrections in Wisconsin is dedicated to promoting public safety through the custody and supervision of individuals within the correctional system. This government agency plays an essential role in the community by ensuring secure, humane, and effective correctional services. Employees of the Department of Corrections have the opportunity to make a meaningful and positive impact in the lives of incarcerated individuals while contributing to a safer society. The Department embraces evidence-based approaches to implement lasting change and create positive outcomes for the citizens of Wisconsin. This commitment underscores the agency’s focus on rehabilitation, safety, and professionalism, drawing a talented workforce that supports correctional operations with integrity and dedication.

Currently, the Department of Corrections is recruiting for a Corrections Food Service Leader 3 position located at the Sanger B. Powers Correctional Center in Oneida, Outagamie County. This is a full-time role within pay schedule and range 03-13, with a starting hourly wage of $23.94. The position offers a competitive benefits package including substantial leave time, multiple paid holidays, affordable health and dental insurance, an exceptional pension plan, and various wellness programs.

This role is pivotal in the daily operations of the correctional facility’s food service department. The Corrections Food Service Leader 3 will oversee the production of meals, ensuring that all food is prepared according to established dietary and safety standards. The leader must ensure all aspects of food preparation meet quality and safety guidelines, reflecting the facility’s commitment to health and well-being.

Working in a commercial kitchen environment within a correctional facility requires a strong focus on safety and teamwork. The Corrections Food Service Leader must collaborate closely with both staff and residents who assist in food preparation, fostering a professional atmosphere that upholds the facility’s strict health policies, including required tuberculosis screening and hepatitis vaccinations. This position also involves physical demands such as standing for extended periods, moving freely around the kitchen, handling kitchen appliances, and lifting weights up to 50 pounds.

The position often requires working near meal times, sometimes including weekends and holidays. Flexibility is important as shifts may extend up to 14 hours a day and surpass 40 hours per week based on operational needs. Some travel may be necessary to cover other sites, attend training sessions, or participate in meetings and conferences. Transporting residents to outside food training events may also be required.

Focused on providing a supportive and well-regulated work environment, the Department’s hiring process includes background checks, drug screenings, and fingerprinting. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and be prepared to maintain certification in food safety, as well as a valid driver’s license in accordance with State of Wisconsin fleet requirements. The Department is an equal opportunity employer actively seeking diverse candidates and providing reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities, emphasizing inclusive recruitment practices.
