Job Description

California Medical Facility (CMF) is a renowned correctional institution located in Vacaville, California. This facility is situated in a unique area offering many opportunities for family activities, exercise, and tourism, being conveniently positioned near major attractions such as Sacramento, San Francisco, and Napa Valley. CMF is committed to maintaining public safety while promoting successful community reintegration through education, treatment, rehabilitative programs, and restorative justice initiatives. It operates under the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS), organizations devoted to creating safer, more professional, and humane environments for both staff and incarcerated individuals. The agency is recognized for its inclusive and culturally diverse workplace, fostering collaboration, fairness, and respect among its workforce and the populations it serves.

The role of Correctional Supervising Cook at California Medical Facility is a vital position responsible for supervising and instructing incarcerated cook crews in the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals in accordance with established menus and standardized recipes. The supervising cook ensures the preparation of sack lunches, fresh fruits, and vegetables while maintaining high sanitary standards within the kitchen. This position involves managing security protocols in the kitchen, enforcing policies for kitchen safety and equipment care, and completing vital documentation such as requisitions, temperature logs, and reports. The Correctional Supervising Cook works under the direction of the Supervising Correctional Cook and collaborates with Assistant Correctional Food Managers and Correctional Food Managers to deliver quality food services within the correctional environment. The position is a 12-month limited-term full-time role with the potential for extension or permanency, offering a monthly salary range of $4,586 to $5,639. This employment opportunity supports those eligible for Training and Development assignments and prioritizes candidates with relevant classifications and eligibility for lateral transfer, reinstatement, SROA, and surplus status.

The position demands leadership skills to manage and coordinate incarcerated persons in food service operations, ensuring dietary needs and food safety regulations are met to support the health and well-being of the population served. Additionally, the role participates in training programs and fosters an environment free from discrimination and harassment, aligning with CDCR’s commitment to equal opportunity and workplace excellence. The Correctional Supervising Cook thus plays a crucial part in the facility’s mission to provide a safe, healthy, and respectful environment that aids rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
