Job Description
Florida International University (FIU) is a leading public research university recognized among the top 50 in the nation. With an enrollment of approximately 55,000 students from all 50 states and over 140 countries, FIU boasts a diverse and dynamic academic community. The university offers more than 200 degree programs across undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels, including distinguished programs in medicine and law. Located in Miami, a global city known for its cultural and economic vibrancy, FIU leverages its unique location to drive impactful research and foster innovation.
FIU prides itself on being a Carnegie R1 institution, emphasizing high research activity in important areas such as environmental resilience, health, and technology innovation. The university is home to notable research centers, including the Wall of Wind and the Institute of Environment, which contribute significantly to advancements in their fields. FIU’s faculty includes respected leaders such as National Academy members, Fulbright Scholars, and MacArthur Genius Fellows. The institution emphasizes student success, economic mobility, and community engagement, striving to redefine the role of a public research university in today’s society.
The role of Assistant Director of Facilities Operations Support within the Division of Student Affairs at FIU is vital to the day-to-day management of the student recreation facilities, chiefly the Wellness and Recreation Center. This position plays a key role in managing student employee staff, coordinating facility scheduling, supporting daily operations, and promoting excellent customer service. The workload and responsibilities include oversight of all facility operations, managing inventory and equipment, supporting special events like varsity athletic practices and community programs, and ensuring risk management protocols are adhered to.
The position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Facilities Operations and involves collaboration with other administrative staff to maintain high standards throughout facility operations. It requires overseeing the hiring, training, and disciplinary processes for student employees, as well as assisting with department purchasing and the upkeep of recreation software systems. A critical aspect of this role includes emergency preparedness and response, serving as the point person during emergency situations such as hurricanes or other university closings. The work schedule primarily covers afternoons and evenings and occasionally weekends, reflecting the operational hours of the recreation facilities.
This position offers a competitive salary range from $42,000 to $47,000 and demands a commitment to supporting the university’s mission of fostering student engagement, wellness, and community through exceptional recreation services. Operating university vehicles is also a component of the role, requiring appropriate checks and clearances. Applicants are expected to meet specific qualifications, including a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain it within 45 days of employment). This exciting opportunity is ideal for candidates who have experience in campus recreation operations and wish to contribute meaningfully to student life at a major public research university.
