Job Requirements

  • Must be able to cook a variety of foods in large quantities
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors and government agencies
  • Must be knowledgeable of food procedures
  • Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions
  • Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment and perform regular inspections of food service areas for sanitation, order and safety
  • Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing food practices
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language understandably
  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or prosthetics to meet position requirements
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity and ability to work with residents and personnel
  • Must meet general health requirements including medical and physical examination
  • Must relate and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and hostile people
  • Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift 25 pounds to 5 feet height and carry such weight at least 50 feet
  • Must be able to taste and smell food for quality and palatability
  • May need to assist in evacuation during emergencies.

Job Qualifications

  • No minimum education required
  • One year food experience preferred in supervisory capacity
  • Ability to cook a variety of foods in large quantities
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Capability to make independent decisions
  • Ability to deal tactfully with residents, personnel, visitors, and government agencies
  • Knowledgeable of food procedures
  • Leadership skills with willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain care and use of supplies and equipment
  • Capacity for regular inspection of food service areas for sanitation, order, and safety
  • Possess patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm
  • Willingness to handle residents at varying maturity levels
  • Ability to seek and incorporate new food methods and principles
  • Must not pose direct threat to workplace health and safety.

Job Duties

  • Process diet changes and new diets received from nursing services
  • Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms and reports
  • Inspect special diet trays to ensure correct diets are served
  • Coordinate food and nutrition services with other departments
  • Assist in establishing a food service production line to ensure timely meal preparation
  • Maintain and file menus according to facility policies
  • Review menus before food preparation
  • Assist in standardizing work methods
  • Ensure food procedures comply with facility policies
  • Assume the responsibility and accountability of cook
  • Sweep and mop floors as directed
  • Prepare food according to standardized recipes, menus, and special diet orders
  • Prepare and serve bedtime snacks
  • Serve meals that are palatable and visually appealing
  • Prepare and serve substitute foods for residents refusing served foods
  • Provide appropriate equipment and utensils with meals
  • Serve food following portion control procedures
  • Report occupational exposures to the Certified Dietary Manager
  • Attend mandatory in-service training and participate in workshops
  • Assist and direct cleaning duties according to policies
  • Dispose of food and waste properly
  • Follow sanitary regulations and infection prevention policies
  • Ensure departmental safety and cleanliness
  • Report accidents and hazardous conditions promptly
  • Assist in inventorying and storing food and supplies
  • Support food preparation for special meals and events
  • Make authorized food substitutions
  • Assist in serving meals timely
  • Maintain liaison with other department directors
  • May work beyond normal hours and subject to call back during emergencies
  • Attend continuing education programs
  • Comply with safety and sanitation requirements throughout workday.
