Job Description

Summit is a specialized food service provider focused on serving correctional institutions across the United States. Their mission is to ensure that incarcerated individuals have access to delicious, nutritious, and high-quality meals at every mealtime. Operating within correctional facilities demands a unique approach to food preparation, emphasizing safety, quality, and efficiency in a challenging environment. Summit is committed to supporting the social interaction and well-being of incarcerated people through mealtime experiences, a critical part of daily life in these institutions.

The role available is for a Cook at Summit's Laurinburg, North Carolina location, operating within the correctional facility kitchen division. This is a full-time, onsite position offering $15.00 per hour in compensation. The cook will join a highly motivated and energetic kitchen team, working in a fast-paced and efficient environment focused on preparing and serving high-quality meals. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about culinary arts, particularly those with experience in scratch cooking and a commitment to quality and safety.

In this role, the cook will be responsible for quality and portion control, food preparation, creative food presentation, maintaining the kitchen's cleanliness and organization, ensuring proper food storage, and strictly following safe food handling policies, procedures, and recipes. The ability to multitask efficiently while maintaining excellent attention to detail is essential, given the high-volume and fast-paced nature of the kitchen.

Candidates must bring at least one year of prior culinary experience from a quality, high-volume establishment with an emphasis on scratch cooking. It is essential to have a working knowledge of proper culinary methods, techniques, and standards to succeed in this role. Familiarity with various kitchen equipment and tools, along with the ability to identify and differentiate food items, is required. Customer service experience is also necessary to help foster a positive dining experience even within a correctional setting.

Preferred qualifications include holding a food handler's certification, which highlights a commitment to food safety and compliance with health regulations. Summit supports its employees with comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage for full-time employees. Additional benefits such as voluntary insurance offerings for accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity, a discount program, commuter benefits, employee assistance programs (EAP), 401k plans, sick time, holiday pay including nine paid holidays, tuition reimbursement for full-time employees, and paid time off underline the company’s investment in the health and well-being of its staff.

Joining Summit means becoming part of a dedicated team that takes pride in serving a meaningful purpose while advancing their culinary careers. The correctional food service segment presents a unique and rewarding challenge, offering cooks a chance to develop professionally while contributing to an important social function. This role encourages personal growth within a supportive and stable corporate structure, combining the benefits of a specialized niche with the backing of a respected national organization such as Elior North America.
