Job Description
The position offered is aboard a hopper dredge under the Portland District, specifically on the hopper dredges Yaquina and Essayons. These specialized sea-going vessels play a crucial role in maintaining safe navigation channels for ships and other vessels by dredging and transporting dredged materials from ocean bars, fast-flowing rivers, and isolated harbors to designated open-water disposal sites. The Portland District is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages and protects waterways and infrastructure vital to commerce, transportation, and environmental stewardship. Job Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to suitability or fitness determination by background investigation
- Ability to lift heavy loads up to 45 pounds
- Current US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential, Steward's Department endorsement or higher
- Transportation Worker Identification Card
- Successful completion of pre-employment and annual physical examinations
- Mandatory drug testing compliance
- Must be able to work in high temperature environments
- Must be able to climb ladders in all sea conditions
- Must be able to exert moderate to heavy physical effort storage and handling supplies
- Must possess color and depth perception
- Must be a US citizen
- Male applicants born after 1959 must register for selective service

- Ability or potential ability to take responsibility for completing an assignment
- Experience as an informal group leader or leading a team to complete a project

Job Duties
- Prepare and serve meals aboard a hopper dredge to all crew members
- Prepare various meats such as poultry, fish, chops, steaks, roasts
- Prepare vegetables and fruits by cutting, grinding, dicing, and slicing
- Prepare soups, stews, gravies, and sauces
- Bake bread, cakes, and pastries
- Maintain all galley areas in a clean and orderly condition
- Conduct personnel administration by assigning work to subordinates
- Counsel employees regarding conduct, leave, benefits, and performance and initiate necessary disciplinary action
