The Cook position at Church's Chicken is pivotal to ensuring high-quality food preparation and maintaining operational standards as outlined in the company’s Operating Standards Manual (OSM). Reporting directly to the Restaurant General Manager and operating within the Field Operations department, this role is responsible for the timely preparation and cooking of food products, adhering strictly to the specifications, procedures, and safety policies established by the company. The cook plays a crucial part in making sure the food served meets the brand's quality and consistency standards and contributes positively to the customer experience.

In this role, cooks are tasked with setting up their workstations efficiently, including preparing batter tables, collecting the necessary smallwares, and mixing batters. They ensure equipment is in optimal working condition, promptly reporting any malfunctions, and are responsible for color-balancing fryers and managing shortening levels to maintain food quality. They also filter and clean fryers regularly, while following all safety guidelines, including the proper use of safety equipment.

Food preparation duties involve panning chicken, cooking food products according to business needs, and ensuring all products meet the quality benchmarks and holding times specified in the OSM. Beyond cooking, the role encompasses maintaining cleanliness and organization within the work area by adopting 'clean-as-you-go' practices, stocking necessary products and supplies, and ensuring cooler organization. The cook must also be ready to perform additional tasks assigned by the manager in charge, demonstrating flexibility and teamwork.

Physical demands of the job require medium to heavy lifting, standing or walking for extended periods, and handling stock items and equipment that can weigh up to 75 pounds. The role demands a high level of physical activity including reaching, stooping, carrying, pushing, pulling, and continuous manual dexterity. Communication with customers, management, and team members is essential for ensuring smooth operations and excellent service delivery.

Job Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 75 pounds occasionally
  • Able to stand and walk on hard floors for up to 8 hours continuously
  • Ability to push, pull and carry equipment such as batter tables and trash cans
  • Willingness to follow all safety guidelines including use of safety equipment
  • Ability to frequently stoop, squat and reach overhead
  • Must be able to handle food items and supplies with manual dexterity
  • Good communication skills to interact with customers and team members

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Prior experience in a food preparation or cooking role recommended
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards

Job Duties

  • Set up the batter table, collect all necessary smallwares and prepare batter mix
  • Ensure that call sheets are complete, posted and used
  • Check all equipment and immediately report any malfunctions to the Manager in Charge
  • Color balance fryers and add sufficient shortening to maintain proper shortening level
  • Filter and clean all fryers at designated times following safety guidelines
  • Pan sufficient chicken for operational needs
  • Prepare and cook all food products as directed by the Manager in Charge
  • Ensure all food products meet specifications, procedures and quality standards including holding times
  • Maintain a clean work area by practicing clean-as-you-go procedures
  • Verify all necessary product and supplies are stocked and available
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of the cooler
  • Perform all other tasks assigned by Manager in Charge of Shift
