The Cook position at CHOC is a vital role within the Food Service Department, focused on preparing nutritious and visually appealing meals for patients, catering events, and cafeteria services. This role involves adhering to standardized recipes, production schedules, and catering requests to ensure timely delivery and service of meals. The Cook is responsible for maintaining the highest standards of food quality, ensuring proper texture, color, temperature, and presentation to enhance the dining experience for patients and staff alike. Food safety and sanitation are paramount in this role, requiring scrupulous attention to proper handling and hygienic practices. The Cook may also be involved in food delivery and serving duties, highlighting the importance of teamwork within the food service team. This position is scheduled as an 8-hour night shift with flexibility for different start times and the occasional requirement to work on weekends. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum one year of cooking experience in restaurant, hotel or healthcare
  • Ability to read, write and communicate fluently in English
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform simple math
  • Ability to organize time and promote teamwork
  • Willingness to cross-train within Food Service Department
  • Ability to lift and carry 40-50 lbs
  • Ability to push/pull 150-200 lbs
  • Ability to perform physical activities including bending, climbing, standing, walking, and fine motor skills

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum one year of cooking experience in restaurant, hotel or healthcare
  • Preferred associates degree or culinary degree
  • Ability to read, write and communicate fluently in English
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform simple math
  • Willingness to cross-train within Food Service Department
  • Preferred Serv-Safe certification
  • Preferred bilingual skills
  • Preferred strong catering and computer skills

Job Duties

  • Prepare food for patients, catering and cafeteria using standardized recipes, production sheets and catering request forms
  • Ensure food is prepared in a timely manner to meet meal service deadlines
  • Maintain standards of color, texture, appearance, temperature and presentation of food
  • Handle food using appropriate safety and sanitation standards
  • Deliver and/or serve food as required
  • Promote teamwork and cross-train within the Food Service Department
  • Support environmental sustainability practices in food preparation and handling
