Job Requirements

  • candidate must pass a post employment offer physical exam and physical capacity examination
  • candidate must pass criminal history record check through Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation
  • candidate must pass child and adult abuse record check through Iowa Department of Human Services
  • criminal background check required
  • drug screening required prior to final offer
  • ability to work evenings nights weekends and holidays as required
  • ability to work overtime with minimal advance notice
  • ability to operate an agency van safely

Job Qualifications

  • formal training in food service or meal preparation
  • six to twelve months of experience in a large or medium scale institutional food service operation
  • knowledge of food safety handling storage and serving temperatures
  • proficiency in operating kitchen equipment including ovens grills steam tables fryers deep fryers slicers mixers graters and blenders
  • ability to read and follow recipes menus instructions and procedures
  • ability to measure ingredients accurately
  • knowledge of USDA dietary standards and child nutrition requirements
  • ability to prepare wholesome appetizing meals
  • ability to adjust ingredient quantities and substitute ingredients
  • ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds
  • ability to stand for extended periods
  • valid State of Iowa driver’s license

Job Duties

  • prepares a variety of foods including foods for special dietary needs such as meat vegetables salads desserts and soup using various cooking methods
  • measures ingredients to ensure use of proper amounts in recipes
  • operates and maintains kitchen equipment including ovens grills steam tables fryers deep fryers slicers mixers graters and blenders
  • monitors food temperature to ensure safe serving and storage
  • stocks and retrieves food from shelves and walk in freezer or refrigerator
  • sanitizes kitchen equipment appliances utensils floors walls counters tables trays and food carts to comply with health and safety regulations
  • serves portions of food on trays or assembly line to serve correct amount and type of food
  • assists in maintaining safety and security by monitoring resident movements accounting for kitchen equipment utensils and supplies to prevent unauthorized removal
  • identifies and reports potential safety hazards or security breaches
  • assists in preparing and planning menus and ordering food and supplies
  • performs related duties as required
