Job Description
The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) located in Richmond, Virginia, is a premier federal agency dedicated to providing logistics support to the United States military services and other federal agencies. DLA plays a vital role in ensuring that the military is well-equipped with supplies, including food, fuel, and medical items, necessary for national defense and operational readiness. As an organization with a commitment to excellence, innovation, and public service, the DLA Richmond facility focuses on delivering quality logistic solutions while supporting the needs of the military community in the Richmond area.
This position is an intermittent role within the cooking job family at pay scale NA 4, offering an hourly wage ranging between $19.60 and $22.86, with most individuals starting at the Step 1 rate of $19.60 per hour. The intermittent appointment means there are no guaranteed hours, and work schedules are flexible, occurring Monday through Friday between 6:00 AM and 2:30 PM, subject to operational needs. This unique opportunity is well-suited for those interested in developing cooking skills in a federal work environment that supports military and civilian communities.
The role involves preparing simple, straightforward meals with limited processing, such as pancakes, sausages, eggs, hamburgers, and fresh or canned vegetables. Candidates will have the responsibility to prepare food items by peeling, chopping, slicing, weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients according to standard and modified menu requirements. Operating various kitchen equipment powered by gas, electricity, steam, or microwave, and performing routine cleaning and maintenance tasks ensure safety and sanitation standards are met. The position emphasizes adherence to established food sanitation procedures and workplace cleanliness to protect food quality and employee well-being.
Candidates must undergo specific pre-employment requirements, including employment verification through E-Verify, medical examinations, and may require a Tier 1 background investigation for access to federally controlled facilities. Additionally, a minimum of 4 hours of initial food sanitation and safety training within 30 days of employment and annual refresher training is required for continued compliance.
Ideal candidates typically possess experience in cooking and food preparation in settings such as cafeterias, restaurants, or military messes. Strong work behaviors that align with the agency’s values—neatness and good grooming, dependability, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure—are desirable. While there is no formal education requirement, the ability to demonstrate relevant skills and professionalism is essential.
This position supports meaningful contributions to the federal government’s mission and offers intermittent employment within a safety-focused, operationally critical environment. Employees benefit from working in a setting that supports the military and civilian population, with opportunities for professional development and access to various on-base amenities. While not eligible for full benefits due to the intermittent nature, the role offers participation in the 401(k) retirement savings plan for flexible employees, and the potential for Sunday and premium pay based on hours worked.
Candidates should be committed to public service values and improving government efficiency, with a passion for supporting the United States Constitution and the ideals of the American republic. This job is open to U.S. Citizens, Nationals, and certain non-U.S. Nationals meeting residency requirements, focusing on candidates within a local 50-mile commuting radius of DLA Richmond. Applicants are encouraged to submit well-prepared applications, including resumes that clearly reflect their skills and experience relevant to this position, to ensure thorough consideration.
Overall, the position provides a valuable opportunity to contribute to a mission-critical federal agency while gaining experience in food preparation and kitchen operations within a military-supportive setting. The role demands commitment, flexibility, and a safety-conscious approach to food handling and kitchen equipment operation, all within a framework that values integrity, reliability, and service to the nation.
