Located at the Richmond State Supported Living Center in Richmond, Texas, this full-time Cook II position plays a crucial role in the Food Service Department, directly supporting the health and nutritional needs of residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities, many of whom are medically fragile or have complex behavioral needs. Working in such a specialized environment requires a dedication to maintaining the highest standards of food safety, preparation, and service, particularly given the unique dietary needs of the residents. The role demands complex technical skills and a strong commitment to quality, as the Cook II is responsible for preparing, cooking, portioning, and serving food for regular and modified diets. In addition to hands-on cooking tasks, the position involves supervising and training subordinate kitchen staff, ensuring that all food service activities comply with state and federal regulations, and contributing to the overall operational efficiency of the kitchen.
As part of the Food Service Department, the Cook II will attend to various essential functions including preparing meals from standardized menus and recipes, ensuring sanitary conditions, handling food deliveries, maintaining kitchen sanitation, and operating kitchen equipment safely. This position also involves administrative responsibilities such as maintaining records, reporting equipment maintenance needs, and participating in disaster response or continuity of operations plans as required. The salary range for this role is $2,904.91 to $3,946.25 monthly, classified under TEXAS-A-11 pay group, with a day shift schedule that may require flexibility for overtime, weekends, and holidays. This position does not offer telework options and may involve up to 5 percent travel. Eligibility requirements include a valid Texas driver’s license and required food service certifications within six months of hire. Candidates must also pass a fingerprint criminal background check, drug screening, and registry checks to ensure a safe environment for residents and staff. Job Requirements
- Valid Texas driver’s license and eligible driving record per HHSC policy
- Texas Food Manager certification or Food Protection Manager Certification within six months of hire
- Food handler training as required by Texas law
- Ability to lift at least 25 pounds
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods on hard floors
- Ability to work in hot and cold conditions
- Must pass fingerprint criminal background check, drug screen, and registry checks
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, extended hours, and overtime
- Must comply with Selective Service registration if male aged 18-25
Job Qualifications
- Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent preferred
- Six months of food preparation work required
- Six months experience cooking in a health care food service operation preferred
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Basic math skills used in cooking and preparation
- Knowledge of food preparation methods, specialized diets, and sanitation regulations
- Skill in use and care of food preparation appliances and equipment
- Ability to guide, train, and oversee the work of others
- Ability to complete accurate records and reports
Job Duties
- Attend work regularly and adhere to assigned shift schedules
- Prepare, season, cook, and assemble food for regular and modified diets ensuring sanitary conditions
- Operate and maintain food service equipment safely and provide training to staff
- Calculate food quantities accurately according to standardized menus and recipes
- Distribute and serve food safely including special diets following food service procedures
- Maintain sanitation and cleanliness of kitchen, dining, and food preparation areas
- Guide, train, and oversee subordinates in food preparation, equipment usage, and safety procedures
- Complete required records and reports and recommend improvements to supervisors
- Perform duties supporting disaster response and agency continuity of operations
- Handle cash in facility canteen when applicable
- Receive and store deliveries properly
- Communicate effectively via telephone and media
- Participate in other duties as assigned to ensure food service operational functionality
