Job Description
The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, with a rich history dating back centuries, forms a close-knit community that has evolved over time while maintaining its core values and traditions. Located in the San Diego Region, the Sycuan Tribe governs its reservation and operates a state-of-the-art casino, a beautiful golf resort, and various other business ventures. The organization prides itself on fostering a strong sense of community, not only among its members but also extended to its employees. Working at Sycuan means becoming part of a family dedicated to collaboration, excellence, and a shared mission to provide exceptional services and memorable experiences for guests who visit its diverse venues.
The Cook I role at Sycuan is an hourly position designed for individuals who are passionate about culinary arts and eager to contribute to an efficient, high-quality food and beverage operation. Under the guidance of the designated venue Sous Chef, the Cook I is responsible for preparing food and menu items strictly following approved recipes, cooking methods, and ingredients as prescribed by Food and Beverage/Culinary Management. This role demands attention to detail, consistency in quality and flavor, and adherence to health and safety codes to ensure guest satisfaction and compliance with casino standards.
The Cook I will maintain all assigned food preparation areas, kitchen equipment, and supplies to ensure cleanliness and operational efficiency. Sycuan values teamwork highly, and this role requires a positive, team-oriented attitude that promotes a welcoming environment for internal team members and external guests alike. The successful candidate will demonstrate fundamental cooking skills such as knife handling, basic cooking methods, food rotation practices including FIFO (First In, First Out), and the ability to read and interpret food order tickets to deliver timely meals.
The ideal candidate will possess at least six months of fast food or casual cooking experience and hold a County of San Diego Food Handler Card. While a culinary degree or equivalent experience is desirable, Sycuan also values prior guest service or hospitality experience, which reflects an understanding of the importance of excellent customer engagement in a dynamic food service setting.
Skills essential for success in this role include effective communication in English, safe food handling knowledge, professionalism, multitasking, and physical stamina such as lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for extended periods. The ability to work in a fast-paced, sometimes smoking environment, paired with a commitment to punctuality and reliability, rounds out the profile of a strong candidate for this position.
Joining Sycuan not only offers employment but also the opportunity to be part of a vibrant community striving to create memorable guest experiences. Employees here benefit from a supportive work culture that respects and encourages continuous learning and growth. If you are someone who values teamwork, quality food preparation, and contributing to a positive guest environment, Sycuan warmly invites you to apply and become part of their winning team.
