Job Description

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is a prominent state agency dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Texans across the state. Serving a critical role, HHSC manages a diverse range of health and human services programs designed to support vulnerable populations including individuals with disabilities, health challenges, and social needs. The agency operates multiple specialized facilities such as psychiatric hospitals, youth residential treatment centers, and state-supported living centers, making it a comprehensive caretaker for the community's health and social service needs. HHSC is well-regarded for its commitment to excellence, with all its psychiatric hospitals accredited by The Joint Commission, reflecting their dedication to high standards in healthcare provision. This agency fosters an environment that supports its workforce throughout their careers by offering a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% paid employee health insurance for eligible full-time employees, a defined benefit pension plan, generous time off, and abundant opportunities for career growth and advancement. These benefits, combined with a meaningful mission, make HHSC a respected employer in the public health and human services sector.

The role of Cook I at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is a vital position responsible for providing routine, journey-level food preparation work at Terrell State Hospital. This full-time, non-exempt position offers a salary ranging from $2,639.75 to $3,404.91 per month and requires day and evening shifts, including some travel up to 10%. As a Cook I, you will prepare, cook, portion, distribute, and serve food compliant with therapeutic diet specifications and textures. Your responsibilities will include adhering to prescribed menus, recipes, and culinary standards while maintaining strict sanitation and safety procedures that comply with federal, state, and HACCP guidelines. Working under moderate supervision, this position requires reliable performance of routine tasks with limited independent judgment. The role may also involve driving delivery vehicles and working in different areas of the kitchen such as the ingredient room. Beyond daily food preparation, this position supports broader agency objectives such as disaster response and continuity of operations, which may require additional duties, alternate shifts, or locations. You will play a crucial role in fostering a safe, clean, and organized environment while helping provide therapeutic nutrition that contributes positively to patient care and recovery. Joining HHSC means contributing directly to public service, improving the quality of life for Texans in state institutions, and being part of a dedicated team that values teamwork, dependability, and trustworthiness.
