Job Description

The hiring establishment is a reputable organization dedicated to providing high-quality culinary services in a large institutional kitchen setting. Known for its commitment to excellence and food safety, this organization ensures that every meal served meets strict standards of quality, taste, and presentation. Whether catering for a hospital, school, military facility, or other large-scale institution, the organization prides itself on maintaining a professional and efficient kitchen environment where teamwork and adherence to food safety protocols are paramount. They value employees who demonstrate strong work ethics, attention to detail, and a passion for culinary arts. The kitchen is equipped with modern appliances and follows standard operating procedures to maintain consistency and safety in food preparation and service.

The role of Cook I is critical in sustaining this high standard by preparing meals that adhere to established recipe cards, production procedures, and systems. As a Cook I, you will be responsible for using standardized measuring tools and various kitchen utensils to prepare food that is not only delicious but also visually appealing and served at proper temperatures. You will play an integral role in coordinating meal preparation schedules to ensure timely serving that preserves the quality and appearance of the food. Your ability to use progressive cooking techniques will contribute to consistent meal quality and efficiency. Beyond cooking, you will operate kitchen equipment including stoves, ovens, microwaves, and refrigerators, while constantly monitoring food appearance and quality to recommend any necessary adjustments.

This position requires a sound knowledge of food sanitation, safe operation of kitchen equipment, and proper food storage practices, including date-marking perishable items. Additionally, strong arithmetic skills are essential for portion control and for determining food quantities needed for production. The role demands the ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately, including menus and worksheets, and effectively coordinate tasks to ensure timely meal preparation. You will interact and communicate regularly with management and other personnel to facilitate smooth kitchen operations. Compliance with organizational policies, rules, and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) standards is mandatory to maintain a safe and healthy working environment.

Preferred qualifications include a certificate in food handling and sanitation or ServSafe certification, alongside a demonstrated history of experience in cooking or baking within large institutional kitchens or in the military. Good customer service skills and a strong work ethic are highly valued, making this an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to advance their culinary career within a stable and organized institution. This is a role that not only requires culinary expertise but also dedication to maintaining high standards of hygiene and kitchen safety, with a clear emphasis on teamwork and proper food handling.
