Job Description
Located in Brownsville, Texas, UT Rio Grande Valley is an educational institution that supports a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. We are currently hiring a full-time Cook to join our campus food service team at the location on N Sugar Road in Brownsville, Texas. This role is essential in ensuring that high-quality, nutritious meals are prepared and served in accordance with federal, state, and corporate standards as well as health and safety regulations. The position offers a fixed pay rate of $12.00 per hour and includes varying schedules which may include mornings and evenings. This full-time role is suitable for candidates with prior culinary experience who are passionate about food preparation, kitchen safety, and providing excellent service to customers.
The Cook will prepare food by following standardized recipes and instructions to meet production, delivery, and service schedules. Ensuring that meals are served at the correct temperature, properly portioned, and attractive are key responsibilities. This includes checking the taste and quality of all prepared items. The role requires maintenance of a clean, safe kitchen environment by cleaning after food preparation and service periods and proper food storage in compliance with safety procedures. Additionally, the Cook will operate and maintain kitchen equipment, assist with inventory ordering and receiving, and report any maintenance issues or accidents immediately. Staff safety is a priority, so adherence to safety protocols such as wearing gloves when handling knives or hot items and using slip-resistant shoes is mandatory.

Job Duties
- prepares high-quality food items according to standardized recipes and instructions to meet production, delivery and service schedules
- serves meals or prepares for delivery by using correct portioning, meeting outlined standards, ensuring that food is at the correct temperature and is attractive and tasty
- tastes all prepared food items
- uses established ticket collection procedures during service
- responsible for records from area worked during service periods
- cleans kitchen after preparation and serving, maintaining high standards of cleanliness
- stores or discards excess food in accordance with safe food-handling procedures
- keeps refrigerators and storerooms clean and neat
- ensures food and supply items are stored per standards
- operates and maintains kitchen equipment as instructed
- assists in production planning, record keeping and reporting as required
- assists in the ordering and receiving of all food and supplies as required
- reports needed maintenance, faulty equipment or accidents to the supervisor immediately
- attends in-service and safety meetings
- maintains good working relationships with coworkers, customers, administrators and managers
- performs job safely while maintaining a clean, safe work environment
- performs other duties as assigned
- ensures proper presentation, portion control and maintenance of serving temperatures
- follows HACCP standards
