Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • one to three years of institutional cooking or quantity food preparation experience
  • City of Bristol Food Handlers Certification required
  • general orientation at time of hire
  • fire, safety, and infection control training annually
  • knowledge of standards measures
  • knowledge of proper knife use
  • knowledge of proper sanitation practices
  • recipe reading and comprehension and conversion skills
  • basic cooking skills
  • experience in using cooking equipment such as slicers, food choppers, mixers, ovens, and fryers
  • physical ability to bend, reach, stand, walk and lift 15-30 pounds
  • ability to stand for prolonged periods up to three or more hours
  • ability to verbalize clearly
  • normal or correctable vision and hearing
  • ability to work in temperatures ranging from 0 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  • ability to work in noisy kitchen environment
  • ability to use cleaning chemicals and sanitizers
  • ability to read, write and perform basic math
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions

Job Duties

  • Opens kitchen and sets up production preparation area
  • reviews menus and production sheets, refers questions to supervisor
  • prepares food using recipes and follows production sheets and batch cooking procedures
  • ensures timely preparation of food for patient trays, cafeteria, and catering
  • reports spoilage or shortages and handles leftovers properly
  • uses and maintains kitchen equipment including knives, slicers, choppers, mixers, ovens, fryers
  • cleans and sanitizes work areas and equipment
  • supervises cook's helpers, dietary assistants, and pot washers
  • attends weekly cooks meetings
  • performs additional duties and closing responsibilities as assigned
  • follows safety and cleanliness standards
  • demonstrates dependability by following directions, punctuality and attendance
  • exhibits initiative by recognizing problems and recommending improvements
  • promotes teamwork and supports colleagues
