Job Description

Sisters of Charity Hospital is a respected healthcare institution known for its commitment to compassionate patient care and fostering a supportive work environment. The hospital provides a broad range of medical services and values the contribution of each team member in enhancing patient wellness and satisfaction. As part of a well-established healthcare system, Sisters of Charity Hospital ensures that all departments work cohesively to maintain high standards of service, safety, and professionalism. The hospital often embraces innovative practices while upholding its longstanding traditions in healthcare excellence.

The role available is a temporary full-time cook position in Sisters of Charity Hospital's food services department. This position is crucial in supporting the nutritional needs and overall dining experience of patients, staff, visitors, and residents. The cook will work on shift 1, with variable shifts between 5 AM and 7 PM, including days, evenings, weekends, and holiday rotations. The position is classified as non-exempt and falls under the ACE Associates bargaining unit.

The primary responsibility of this role involves preparing, measuring, seasoning, cooking, assembling, and serving various foods by following standardized recipes and maintaining strict menu guidelines. Ensuring food consistency is critical to this role, which entails adherence to exact cooking temperatures and safe food handling practices to uphold health and safety regulations. The cook will perform both batch and inline cooking methods, utilizing culinary techniques such as broiling, grilling, baking, roasting, frying, sautéing, pureeing, and poaching. Additionally, the role demands cleaning and sanitizing duties of work areas, equipment, and kitchen wares to uphold cleanliness and safety standards.

Another significant aspect of the role involves transporting equipment, meals, and supplies within the hospital according to operational requests. This demands physical stamina as the work demands standing and walking for most of the shift, often exposing the cook to varying kitchen conditions, extreme temperatures, steam, and cleaning chemicals. The ability to maintain a positive service culture while working in a fast-paced and sometimes unpredictable environment is essential.

Candidates must demonstrate the capability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. The role requires basic mathematical skills and time management capabilities, including the ability to read and tell time accurately. The cook should have proven culinary skills and a solid understanding of food preparation equipment and safety standards. Since safety is paramount, awareness of potential occupational hazards, such as burns, cuts, exposure to electrical and mechanical equipment, and flammable substances, is crucial. This role offers a dynamic work environment, combining healthcare service with culinary expertise, making it ideal for individuals passionate about food service in a healthcare setting and committed to dietary care and cleanliness standards.
