Job Description
The U.S. government agency is seeking a dedicated and experienced leader to oversee a team of cooks, bakers, and food preparation workers engaged in producing a wide variety of food items on a continuous and full-time basis. This role is crucial in ensuring that food preparation aligns with health and safety standards while meeting the demands of special and regular dietary needs. As a federal agency, the establishment is committed to providing quality service to its constituents while upholding the principles of efficiency, public interest, and leadership. Working within this federal environment offers an employee a stable career with meaningful public service and access to comprehensive benefits.
The position is a leader role responsible for guiding three or more workers in cooking, baking, and general food preparation. Beyond leading and supervising, the role also entails performing assigned cooking and baking tasks efficiently and accurately. The leader ensures all kitchen operations comply with occupational standards and health regulations. Candidates will engage with a spectrum of baking products including bread, rolls, cakes, cookies, pastries, and various fillings and icings, utilizing recipes standardized for large quantity preparation and adjusting for environmental variations such as altitude and humidity. The role requires expertise in using kitchen equipment such as mixers, ovens, proofing boxes, bread slicers, and other specialized machinery. Beyond technical skills, the leader must foster a productive, safe, and hygienic work environment, enforce safety protocols, and ensure team output meets quality and quantity standards.
Working conditions may be challenging, involving exposure to heat, noise, and physical activity including lifting heavy items and standing for prolonged periods. Employees are required to maintain a high level of personal cleanliness and adhere strictly to Food Handler’s License requirements or equivalent health screenings. This position also includes interagency and emergency responsibilities, requiring readiness to maintain critical functions during emergencies as part of mission essential duties. Candidates should possess strong leadership capabilities, communicate effectively, and be adaptable to training and operational requirements as mission demands.
The federal employment context also emphasizes quality of experience over length of service. Therefore, applicants will be evaluated on their knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, health and sanitation standards, problem-solving abilities, arithmetic skills for recipe adjustments, and leadership experience. Training and volunteer experiences contributing to these skills are recognized for qualification consideration. The selected candidate will enjoy federal employment benefits such as retirement plans, health insurance, and leave programs, making this role both professionally and personally rewarding within a service-focused environment.
